Outdoor apps that can help you find a rock climbing route, your next mountain bike trail, or the best places to camp! We use these apps all the time to explore the backcountry, so when Karen Lapides, creator of the Wilderness Medicine Reference App, asked us for help with promoting her new app, we said yes!
What does the Wilderness Medicine Reference App do? It provides you with easy-to-access first aid information to diagnose and treat someone in the wilderness.
Who can use it? The outdoor app is available on both Google Play and in the App Store. It works without cell service and is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and professional guides alike!
Therefore, as this is a brand new app, Karen wants as many eyes on it as possible. However, there is only a small, niche audience that will actually pay to download and use the app. That’s where we come in. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Google Ads were 2 of the key areas we knew we could utilize to help Karen grow brand and app awareness.
Creating more educated Adventurers
Why this need to create a new outdoor app for such a niche market? Well, it’s not so niche anymore! People are spending more time outdoors. Activities like camping, trail running, backcountry skiing, and mountain biking have grown tremendously. In addition, many are new adventurers and are often unprepared when things go wrong.
As a result, they need access to information quickly. But, they often may not have cell service to call 911. Or maybe they did call, but the ambulance or rescue team is still miles away.

To best grow brand awareness for the Wilderness Medicine Reference App, we created a marketing strategy that included updating the SEO on Karen’s Squarespace website, and targeting her user base through Google search and display ads.
As a result of the changes we’ve implemented, we’ve driven over 40,000 people in the 1st month to her website to learn about the app! In addition, we’re seeing an increase in clicks and downloads of the app on both Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
