If your furry companion is too large to fit under the airplane seat in front of you, have hope.  There are a growing number of pet-friendly travel options to avoid putting your large dog in cargo.  International airlines are offering pet-safe programs, there are new charter flights designed specifically for pet owners, and, most interestingly, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Matteo Salvini, is pushing for more pet-friendly travel options in Italy.  In September 2025, Salvini took part in a demonstration flight from Milan to Rome on ITA Airways, which allowed two large dogs to fly in the cabin!

While there are more pet-friendly travel options available if you are moving to Europe with a dog, there are still a lot of steps you need to take to get there.  Therefore, we’ve packed this guide with 8 essential steps, plus a timeline to ensure a smooth process.  After moving to Europe with our dog, we wrote it all down to give you the confidence you need to start planning right now!

Lucy comes with us everywhere, and the thought of leaving her behind when we moved to Europe was out of the question.

1. Avoid the Myths and Misinformation Surrounding Moving to Europe with a Dog

First things first.  If you’ve already begun to make travel plans to move abroad with your large four-legged friend, you will hear all sorts of myths and misinformation.  It started the moment we mentioned we were moving to Italy.

• Did you buy Lucy a seat on the plane?”
• “Are you going to sedate her?”
• “Isn’t quarantine mandatory for international travel?”
• “How will she go to the bathroom?”

Sadly, this list goes on.  And these do not even include the traumatizing stories of pets that didn’t make it.  The more we spoke about our plans, the closer we got to our departure date, the more questions were thrown our way.  Instead of following potential misinformation and becoming incredibly stressed about moving to Europe with a dog, start by educating yourself on what’s possible!

2. Research EU Country-Specific Requirements for Your Dog

Before booking any flights, the first step is to research the entry requirements for the EU and your chosen destination.  Keep in mind, some countries in the EU ban certain dog breeds (snub-nose, fighting breeds, pitbulls), while others require you to get insurance.

For moving to Europe with a dog, here are the standard items you’ll need:

• ISO Microchip
• Rabies Vaccination
• International Health Certificate from a USDA-accredited vet
• DOT Attestation Forms (for longer flights/bathroom needs)
• DOT Documentation for Service Animals (if applicable)
• EU Passport (if you are traveling to several countries within the EU)

Check official government or embassy websites.  Make a checklist of all required paperwork and crate requirements for moving to Europe with a dog to avoid delays, quarantine, or denied entry at check-in or customs.

3. Find Airlines and Companies that Can Support Your Move to Europe with a Dog

Dog-Friendly Private and Semi-Private Charter Flights

At the top of the list of airlines that can help you move to Europe with a dog are the luxury, pet-focused charter services like K9 Jets and Bark Air.  In addition, semi-private airlines like JSX also have a great pet policy.  Keep in mind, these private and semi-private flights are all expensive (typically $6,000–$10,000 one-way for human + dog), but your pup travels right beside you in comfort.  If you are relocating to Europe and plan to stay for a while, this might be a great option.

We explored these dog-friendly charter flights early on.  Especially once we began to add up the costs for a business class flight with Lucy in cargo.  I even suggested Tyler could travel in style with Lucy, and I would slum it in coach on a regular flight!

However, before you get too excited, private charters and semi-private flights operate between major international travel hubs: Los Angeles, Paris, London, New York, and Milan.  Furthermore, flights were infrequent, once a month at best, and were sold out months in advance.

Identify Pet-Friendly Airlines and Explore Their Pet Policies

Iberia and Lufthansa are among the most pet-friendly European airlines.  Lufthansa even has a specialized pet lounge in Frankfurt!  Read the pet policies, pet carrier sizes, and weight limits for each airline that offers flights to your destination. 

Contrary to the myth we heard so often, you cannot simply buy a seat for your dog on a domestic or international flight!  For international flights from the U.S. to Europe, here’s more on the most pet-friendly airlines and their pet policies:

• Alaska Airlines and its Pet Connect Program
• United Airlines Pet Policy and PetSafe Program
• Delta International Pet Travel
• American Airlines Pet Policy and PetEmbark Program

As an example, we booked through Lufthansa, which is a partner of United, and had to research pet policies for both airlines.  United managed the first leg of our flight, while Lufthansa handled the second part of our journey.  As soon as we booked our flights, we called to confirm that there would be a room for our dog in cargo on both flights.  You should also have this added to your reservation, as only a certain number of dogs are allowed in cargo on each flight.

Research Pet Shipping and Pet Relocation Companies

While the best way of moving to Europe with your dog is to have them right next to you in the cabin, you may need to fly separately.  In this case, look into pet relocation or pet shipping companies.  Here are a few that can help you with everything from the paperwork to crate training and beyond:

• Happy Tails Travel– Pet travel company based in Arizona
• Animal Air- Pet relocation company based in Tampa, Florida
• Starwood Pet Travel– Pet moving company based in Florida, has mixed reviews

Traveling By Cruise Ship With Your Dog

One additional option we looked into was whether dogs were allowed on cruise ships.  The Queen Mary 2, or the QEII, operated by Cunard Lines, is one of the only cruise ships that allows dogs and cats on two of its routes- New York to Southampton, England, or New York to Hamburg, Germany.

The Queen Mary II has a dedicated kennel deck for dogs and cats, and also an area where you can take your dog out for a walk!  Pets are not allowed in guest staterooms or public areas (except service animals), but this might be an easier, more scenic way to get your dog overseas.

4. Book Shorter Flights and Allow for Longer Connection Times When Moving to Europe with a Dog

While it might take longer to get there, shorter flight segments often make for a safer, more humane journey when moving to Europe with a dog.  Long-haul flights can be stressful for animals, especially if your dog must travel in the cargo hold or in a carrier that limits movement.  Shorter flights mean less time confined and more frequent opportunities for bathroom breaks, water, and maybe a quick walk during layovers.

Longer connection times also help you avoid the anxiety of tight transfers, giving both you and your pet time to stretch, hydrate, and navigate customs or additional security screenings calmly.  Keep in mind, not all airports have pet relief areas within the terminals.  Newark Airport has pet relief areas; however, Venice Airport in Italy does not.

As an example, when we fly to Europe, we opt for the direct flight on United/Lufthansa from San Diego to Munich.  However, it’s 11 hours long!  Flights lasting more than 8 hours are too long for a pet to remain contained in its carrier or in cargo.  Therefore, we booked shorter flights with Lucy, from San Diego to Newark first, then onto Europe.

If having a dog has kept you from moving to Europe or travelling internationally, there are new ways to get them there safely and comfortably.

5. Explore Options for Travelling to Europe with a Service Animal

While all airlines have scaled back traveling with an emotional support animal (ESA) in the cabin, service animals trained to perform specific tasks for their owner’s well-being are allowed to travel in the cabin on all major airlines at no additional cost.

If your dog qualifies and you’ve ensured the proper training, you will need to print out and complete the following forms to prepare for moving to Europe with a service dog:

• Department of Transportation (DOT) Service Animal Air Transportation Form
• DOT Service Animal Relief Attestation Form

As soon as you book your flight, call to make sure there is a room for your service dog and ensure it is noted on your reservation for all flight segments.  When you select a seat, pay for a bulkhead seat, extra legroom, or upgrade to business class or first class.

Overbooking, fraudulent claims, or missing paperwork can result in fines or the denial of your dog at check-in.  If you are unsure if your service dog can fly with you while calmly navigating check-in, security screenings, and the normal airport chaos, speak with an experienced dog trainer who works with service animals.

6. Visit a USDA-Accredited Veterinarian Before Moving to Europe with a Dog

One of the most important steps you will take before moving to Europe with a dog is to find a USDA-accredited veterinarian.  Most likely, as it was in our case, your current veterinarian does not have a USDA accreditation.  You need a USDA-accredited vet to provide you with a Health Certificate, get it approved by the USDA, and complete the paperwork needed to travel internationally with your dog.

Check the USDA APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) website to see if your veterinarian is approved.  If not, research vets nearby who have the accreditation and are taking new patients.  Just because their accreditation may show as current on the USDA website does not mean they are still certified.  We spent some time calling around to find Lucy a new vet who would help us.

Budget between $500-800 to complete this process, from vet appointments to vaccinations, to the certified documents you’ll need for travel.  When you step out of that airport in Europe with your dog by your side, you will be very happy you went through with it!

A USDA-accredited veterinarian can provide the following:

• Microchip (ISO 11784/11785 standard)
• Rabies vaccination (given at least 21 days before travel)
• Veterinary Health Certificate (must be issued within 10 days of departure)
• Endorsement from the USDA APHIS office (for travel to the EU or UK)

Never assume your vet automatically knows all international requirements; always confirm for your specific destination.  In addition to the list of items above, you might also need tapeworm treatments or tick prevention!

Pro Tip: Identify a veterinary clinic with not only a USDA-accredited vet, but one that has extensive experience in submitting the paperwork for international pet travel.  The Governor Animal Clinic in San Diego had both, plus a dedicated travel consultant we could speak with throughout the entire process!

Where to Enter the EU and What Time of Year is Best

An experienced vet can also help you determine which airport to fly into and what time of year is best to fly.  As an example, Lucy would have needed different paperwork if we flew into London first, or Munich in Germany.  Therefore, we booked flights directly from the U.S. to Italy.  This made it easier as Italy was our first point of entry into the EU and our final destination.

We flew with Lucy in August, which is often the warmest month to travel.  Our vet let us know that even with all the paperwork in order, dogs may be denied travel in cargo if the temperature is above 85°F (29°C) on any leg of our travel itinerary.  These rules also apply when traveling to cold climates.  If the temperature falls below 45°F (7°C), your dog may not be permitted to travel in cargo.

Preparing Your Dog for the Flight

Your USDA-accredited vet can make recommendations on how to prepare your dog for his or her flight.  Despite what you might think, sedation is not recommended for air travel, especially when flying with large dogs.  Changes in air pressure and temperature can make sedation dangerous.  Instead, focus on crate training, creating a calming atmosphere, and including their favorite blanket or toys.  There are also calming supplements or pheromone sprays (like Adaptil).

Our dog trainer suggested we start limiting access to food and water the night before, to prevent any accidents during travel. As our first flight was at 7am, Lucy was hungry and thirsty, but with all the commotion, she wasn’t begging for food.  We gave her water and half of her breakfast in the morning, and then a bit more during our layover.  Plan a long walk or play session before an international flight to help your dog relax naturally!

If your dog is traveling to Europe in a crate or pet carrier, here are some additional tips:

1. Check with your airline on the pet carrier or crate requirements
2. Ensure there is room to stand up and move around
3. Properly label the crate (Name of dog, your phone number, destination, etc.)
4. Include food, water, leash (Securely attached to the crate).
5. Pack bedding and/or pee pads (Doggy diapers are a good idea!)
6. Attach a friendly picture of your dog to the crate 🙂

7. Moving to Europe with a Dog: A Timeline from Vet Visit to Takeoff

The process of moving to Europe with a dog has strict, time-sensitive deadlines, and missing them can mean delays or even denied entry.  Again, bookmark our friend Regina’s blog: Relocating an American Dog to France, and read it next!

Once you bring your dog in for your Health Certificate appointment with your USDA-accredited veterinarian, the clock starts ticking!  The certificate must be issued within 10 days of travel to the EU.  Your vet should submit the paperwork to the USDA on the same day of your appointment.  Keep in mind, your pet’s rabies vaccination must be given at least 21 days before travel, well before this last appointment.

Many vets now submit your pet’s health certificate paperwork electronically to the USDA, but you will still receive the final certified copies by mail.  Consider using expedited shipping (FedEx or similar) to avoid delays, and confirm whether the certified paperwork will be sent directly to you or to your veterinarian.  Always pad your travel schedule by a few extra days, because any delay in receiving signed and stamped paperwork can jeopardize your plans.  We recommend paying extra for airline tickets that are changeable or refundable in case you need to change your flight plans.

Checklist and Timeline for Moving to Europe with a Dog:

1. Find a USDA-accredited veterinarian and schedule an appointment to review travel plans– 3-6 months before traveling
2. Confirm your dog has been included on your flight reservation for cargo or in cabin- 3 months before traveling
3. Update your dog’s rabies vaccination (if needed)- no less than 21 days before your trip!
4. Schedule the Health Certificate appointment– 10 days before your flight
5. Pay for priority shipping to/from the USDA!
6. Ensure your dog’s crate, bedding, food, water, leash, pee pads, doggy diapers, etc., are ready to go.
7. Reduce food and water consumption the night before
8. Arrive at the airport early– no less than 3 hours before your flight
9. Bring extra copies of everything!
10. Try to relax.

Our journey to Italy with our dog Lucy began at the San Diego International Airport.  We had arrived early; however, our transportation to the airport was challenging.  Book a pet-friendly Uber in advance! Or confirm a friend can take you, your luggage, your crate, and your dog to the airport.

The next step was passing muster at the United Airlines counter.  It was 4:30am, and I was so worried Lucy would pee all over the floor as we barely got a walk in before arriving.  I slowly moved all of our bags and her through the maze to get to the check-in counter.

Pro Tip: Do not overpack!  Most travelers moving to Europe with a dog often stay for a long time.  Therefore, besides paying for your dog’s transportation, you will need to pay for any extra bags when you check in, making the process even longer.

We learned our lesson the hard way, and even though United Airlines allowed for bags over 75 pounds, for a fee, the Venice airport in Italy did not.  We spent a good 40 minutes moving items around, and ended up checking an extra bag.  Lucy, meanwhile, was lying at my feet ever so patiently.  Looking up every so often to see if it was her time to pass inspection.

When it was time, the customer service agent reviewed Lucy’s paperwork very carefully.  She was not warm and friendly, and asked me probing questions about her rabies vaccination and her final destination.  Become familiar with your dog’s paperwork before you get to the check-in counter!

8. Preparing for International Arrival with Your Dog

While we planned out our move to Europe with our dog as best we could, we were stuck for three additional hours at Newark Airport waiting for our connecting flight.  During this time, Lucy refused to use the pet-relief area.  I didn’t blame her; the smell of urine was unbearable!  To avoid embarrassment for her and for us, we packed dog diapers and pee pads.

Upon landing in Venice, we were ready for customs inspection.  Keep all documents accessible and identify any pet relief areas in the arrivals terminal beforehand.  Once you’ve cleared entry, if you are anything like me, you will probably cry out loud.  This took 8 months of preparation, and I was certainly more stressed than Lucy throughout the whole process.

We were so incredibly proud of her.  She did not have any accidents, and her tail was wagging when she walked out the doors at the Venice Airport.  The woman at customs barely looked at her paperwork.  She said, “Cane americano? No problem.”  I was floored.  More crying commenced.

Final Thoughts on Moving to Europe with a Dog

While walking out of the airport in Europe might seem like the final step in a very long journey, the process should not end here.  Before our trip got underway, we found a veterinarian in the town we planned to live in, ensured they spoke English, and were accepting new animals.  Finding a local veterinarian is important, especially if you plan to stay with your dog in Europe for an extended period.

In addition, we also had to make an appointment at a local government agency, the Servizio Veterinario or Azienda Sanitaria, to get Lucy her EU Pet Passport.  In Italy and much of the EU, an EU Pet Passport simplifies travel across European borders.

Next, if you are renting a car, taking a shuttle, staying at a hotel, or have booked an Airbnb at your destination, make sure they are pet-friendly and allow big dogs.  I included photos and descriptions of Lucy in my emails to the landlord of the house we rented to make sure they would accept her.  We also had to upgrade to a larger car rental to fit Lucy plus all of our luggage!

1. Define Your Why for Living Abroad

Before diving into logistics, the first thing you need to do is to get clear on why you want to live abroad.  Everyone has different reasons.  America is expensive and crowded, and political sentiments are running high.  Maybe you want to move for a better quality of life and a lower cost of living?  Learn a new language or a new skill?  Or perhaps, like me, you are nearing an age when you can begin to plan for retirement and want to set yourself up somewhere to make all those hard-earned U.S. dollars last longer.

Defining your motivation to leave the U.S. will help guide your decisions as we move through this process.

2. Plan Your Income Stream to Support Your Life Overseas

Planning your income stream takes the #2 spot on our list as it’s the foundation for your move.  Once you know exactly how you’ll sustain income, you remove the biggest barrier to living abroad.

There are several options to create a sustainable income to support your new life:

Working Remotely

Living abroad in the EU or elsewhere isn’t just for freelancers and digital nomads.  However, if you are here for guidance on applying for a digital nomad visa to live in Europe, bookmark our last blog, The Digital Nomad Visa: The Truth Behind What it Takes to Work Remotely in Europe, and read it next!

If you’re established in your career, start by evaluating whether your current role or expertise can translate into opportunities abroad.  Some employers may allow you to begin or continue working remotely outside the U.S.  Keep in mind, taxes and time zones can matter.

However, if that’s not possible, consider leveraging your experience to offer consulting services or project-based work, either to U.S. clients from overseas or directly within your new country of residence.

Creating a Passive Income Stream

Passive income streams can support you while you live abroad, sometimes even covering your living expenses entirely.  For some expats, a combination of solid investments and rental properties provides the security of a steady income without needing to find work overseas.

Here are a few examples of the passive income streams you can explore:

Investments

If you’ve built up a portfolio of investments: stocks, bonds, or other assets, this passive income can provide a stable foundation for living abroad.  The key is to understand how your investments will be taxed once you’re outside the U.S.  Some countries have tax treaties that help avoid double taxation, while others may not.  Consulting with a financial advisor can also help you maximize returns and ensure your investments support your lifestyle overseas.

Rental Properties

• Property manager
• Housekeeper
• Rental contract- especially if you are renting outside of apps like Airbnb and VRBO
• Insurance- specifically for rental properties

The 1 Euro House Idea

The ‘1 Euro House‘ concept began in Sicily in 2008 to deal with abandoned homes and a shrinking population.  In its simplest terms, you purchase a home for 1 euro and agree to fix it up and live in it for a certain amount of time each year.  The 1 Euro House program gained international recognition in 2018-2020 in Sicily and other parts of Italy.  And while this does seem like a viable option, we do not suggest planning to purchase a property and using that to develop a passive income stream.

Many have asked us if this was our plan in Italy.  To buy a ‘1 Euro House‘ and convert it into a rental property.  Unfortunately, purchasing a 1 Euro House often comes with a catch:

• They are often located in remote villages
• The area may be absent of young adults, nightlife, and cultural experiences
• 1 Euro houses are rarely move-in ready
• Major renovations are often needed (how about installing heat, electricity, or running water?!)
• You might be responsible for covering back taxes on the property

3. Research Destinations and Visas

Living Abroad in Europe and the UK

The rise of the digital nomad visa, available in countries throughout Europe, has opened the doors to those who can work from anywhere.  Our step-by-step blog focuses primarily on EU countries, and more specifically, on Italy.  There are also several visa options for Americans who want to relocate to the UK- England, Scotland, or Wales.  Ireland is also a very popular destination, but that will fall under the EU and Schengen Area rules.

One thing to consider is that both the British pound and the euro are worth more than the U.S. dollar, which could make living abroad in the UK, Italy, Greece, Spain, or Portugal more challenging.  Therefore, you may want to research other, less expensive destinations that have vibrant expat communities.

Living Abroad in Mexico, South America, and Central America

Many expats choose to relocate to countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, or Nicaragua due to the low cost of living, ease of travel to/from the U.S., and the language spoken, mainly Spanish.  These countries also have more straightforward visa and residency options compared to Europe.

For example, Mexico offers temporary and permanent residency permits with relatively low income or savings requirements.  Costa Rica has well-defined categories such as Pensionado (for retirees) and Rentista (for those with a steady income).

Here are a few blogs we’ve written on Latin American destinations that have excellent access to the outdoors, cultural experiences, plus a solid wifi signal in most areas:

Retirement Visas and the ‘Golden Ticket’ Visa

Besides the digital nomad visa, there are also retirement visas and investment visas (aka the Golden Ticket visa).  A Retirement Visa, Elective Residency Visa, or Pensione Visa might be of interest if you are retired or nearing retirement age and do not plan to work while in your new country.  The rules vary based on which country you apply to, so read the fine print before applying!

The Investment Visa or ‘Golden Ticket Visa’ grants foreigners the right to live in a country in exchange for a large financial investment.  This was quite popular in places like Spain, Portugal, and Italy.  However, the political climate and regulatory scrutiny are increasing, pushing lawmakers to balance affordable housing with foreign investment opportunities.  Many countries have discontinued the Golden Ticket Visa as a result.

4. Organize Your Documents for Your Visa Application

There is a lot of paperwork that goes into ensuring a successful move overseas.  Once you have selected the country you would like to relocate to, visit their Consulate or Embassy website to learn more about what is required for your visa application.  There will be a long list of items, but break each item down into steps, and you’ll get through it.  You may be required to get documents notarized and apostilled, so start the visa application process 6 to 9 months before your planned departure!

Here are a few common items you will need to submit with your visa application:

• Valid passport-  6 months’ validity beyond your planned stay
• Valid driver’s license in the Consulate/Embassy region where you apply
• Extra passport photos: for visas, residency permits
• Proof of Employment: contract from employer, invoices, business ownership
• Bank account statements: show you meet the Minimum Income Requirement
• Proof of Accommodation Abroad:  A rental contract
• A Clean Criminal Record
• Proof of Health Insurance

Getting a Visa Appointment

One of the hardest steps in our process was getting a visa appointment at the Italian Consulate.  Appointments are booked exclusively through the Prenot@mi website (which literally means ‘book me’ or reserve me’ in Italian).  Begin by creating an account for each person (even as a married couple, you will each need an appointment).  The Prenot@mi website also provides details on the application process and documents needed based on the type of visa you are applying for: Digital Nomad Visa, Elective Residency Visa, etc.

Keep in mind, each country will have a different process to schedule a visa appointment.  Below are tips specifically for the Italian Consulate:

• Wait time for visa appointments on Prenot@mi is 4-6 weeks
• At 3:00 p.m. Rome time (ECT) cancellations and new booking days/times open
• Log in a few minutes before 3pm ECT and have your documents ready
• Refresh the page repeatedly!

Persistence pays off when you are attempting to get an appointment at the Italian Consulate through the Prenot@mi website.  If you don’t see any appointments right away, keep checking daily.  The Consulate only takes visa appointments on certain days and for a very limited amount of time.  Cancellations can open brief windows of opportunity!

We began our application process in January, and after four appointments at the Italian Consulate, we finally received our 1-year visas in May.  Expect an intense process.  Lots of questions about your intent and financial capacity to sustain yourself.  Bring every single document you think you may need!

Pro tip: Make a copy of your visa application packet BEFORE you submit it.  You will often need to resubmit the same documents for your residency permit.  For Italy, you must apply for the Permesso di Soggiorno, or residency permit, within 8 days of arriving in Italy.  Rules for visa applications can change, so try to be patient and don’t expect things to move fast.

5. Plan Your Finances and Create a Monthly Budget for Living Abroad

After you’ve determined your revenue stream and the country you’d like to live in, create a realistic budget.  Factor in your expenses you’ll need to continue to pay in the U.S., along with the cost of living abroad.

This will include your travel and moving expenses, plus your common everyday living expenses, such as:

• Rent
• Utilities– electricity, gas, heat, AC, wifi, and parking
• Transportation– Long-term car rental, vehicle purchase, train or bus pass
• Phone Plan– Keep your U.S. number and add a 2nd line with an eSIM. 1 phone, 2 numbers!
• Healthcare
• Legal Fees, Taxes, Banking– Bank account fees, taxes, and any legal fees
• Food and entertainment
• Activities– gym memberships, ski pass, etc.

For us, our major U.S. expenses are our mortgage payment, home and business expenses, and the management of our two Airbnbs.  We downgraded our U.S. phone plans from AT&T to Mint Mobile.  We sold our car, and we dropped a lot of our memberships and subscriptions- you’ll be surprised at how quickly these add up to major savings!

In addition to your monthly expenses to live abroad, you should have at least 3-6 months of savings as a safety net.  Also, consider opening a no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card, debit card, or a global bank account for easier money management abroad.

Finally, as a U.S. citizen, you must file taxes each year regardless of where you live.  In addition, you may need to pay income taxes in the country you are moving to.  It may be worth hiring an expat tax advisor to ensure compliance while minimizing paying income taxes in two countries (double taxation).

6. How to Find Health Insurance for Americans Living Abroad

Healthcare is one of the most important considerations when moving overseas.  As an American, the joy of dropping your expensive U.S. healthcare policy might be part of the reason you want to leave the U.S.  However, while some destinations offer affordable public healthcare systems that you can eventually buy into, most countries will require proof of health insurance as part of the visa or residency process. 

When searching for a plan, it’s important to distinguish between short-term travel insurance, emergency medical insurance, and full coverage international health insurance plans.  The latter are designed for long-term travelers and expats.  Search for international health insurance plans from GeoBlue, AXA, Cigna, and other trusted sources.  We initially found Safety Wing, but the Italian Consulate said they would not accept this, so we switched to AXA.  International health coverage will be more expensive than local policies, but you can choose a local plan once you settle in.

Keep in mind, if you do plan to travel back to the U.S., you will need to have sufficient coverage during your trip.  This is when travel and emergency medical insurance policies from companies like Faye and Allianz are most helpful.  Regardless of the path you choose, it’s essential to understand what’s covered, especially for emergency care, prescriptions, and pre-existing conditions, so you can live abroad with peace of mind.

7. Find a Place to Live: Long-Term Rentals

One of the most common requirements for visa or residency applications, whether in Europe, Central America, or other regions, is proof of long-term accommodation.  Most countries will require a rental agreement that covers the full length of your intended stay.  Short-term stays on a friend’s couch, hotels, or Airbnb bookings will not satisfy the requirement.  This step can be one of the most challenging parts of turning your dream of living abroad into a reality, so it’s worth starting your search early!

Long-Term Rental Platforms for Living Abroad

Begin by browsing rental websites that specialize in month-to-month or yearly leases in your destination country.  Many countries have local platforms listing apartments, homes, and shared rentals available for 30 days or longer.  In addition, international platforms like Immobiliare, Spotahome, Idealista, or Casas Particulares often list properties across multiple countries, making it easier to compare regions.

Using Airbnb or VRBO

While platforms like Airbnb or VRBO can help you explore neighborhoods and potential homes, short-term bookings usually do not meet visa requirements.  In addition, many consulates require that rental contracts be registered with local authorities.  Furthermore, monthly Airbnb rates can be significantly higher than standard long-term rentals.  For example, a property might rent for €3,500/month on a long-term rental site but €6,000/month on Airbnb.  If you do start your search on Airbnb or VRBO, be prepared to transition to a formal long-term lease once you identify a property.

Working with Local Real Estate Agents

Partnering with a reputable real estate agent or agency can save time and provide guidance, especially if you’re unfamiliar with local laws, contracts, or the language.  Building a relationship with an agent can also help if you have an interest in purchasing a home once you’ve established residency.

Tips for a Safe and Successful Rental Search

Here’s a quick checklist of tips we recommend to others who want to begin living abroad and find a long-term rental:

• Sign up for rental apps– Idealista, Immobiliare, etc.
• Use in-app messaging tools and WhatsApp to communicate
• Avoid sharing sensitive information: no personal or bank account details
• Verify the property’s location via Google Maps
• Check walkability, transportation options, and neighborhood safety
• Confirm the rental listing matches the photos, and ask for more photos if needed
• Are utilities included? Wi-Fi, heating, A/C, parking, etc.
• What is the cancellation policy?
• How much of a deposit is needed to guarantee your commitment?

We used Immobiliare.it and Idealista.it for our search.  Once we connected with a private landlord, we arranged video calls and asked lots of questions about the home.  In the end, we were so grateful that he not only agreed to provide a 12-month rental contract, but he also filed it with the Italian Tax Authority to help us meet our visa requirements!  Lastly, his parents live in a downstairs apartment, they speak English, and have truly helped us acclimate to our new home.

By planning ahead, leveraging rental platforms and agents, and asking the right questions, you can secure a rental that not only satisfies visa or residency requirements but also sets you up for a smooth, comfortable life abroad.

8. Downsize, Digitize, and Forward Your Mail Before Leaving the U.S.

Simplify your life before you begin living abroad!  Yes, you can rent a storage unit, but we’ve learned it’s best to sell or donate belongings you can live without.  If you have a storage shed or attic space, organize items into labeled bins that you won’t need for a while.

For big-ticket items, sell what you can and store the rest.  We sold our car, skis, rooftop tent, and many other large items that we didn’t have room for.  Many of which can be easily purchased abroad or replaced when we return.

We brought a small packet of important documents with us, but most items we digitized, backed them up securely on our laptop, and in the cloud.  For your mail, begin to cancel all subscriptions (bye Amazon!), magazines, and newspapers.  Convert to paperless statements for all accounts whenever possible.

For regular U.S. mail, arrange for someone to collect your mail, set up a P.O. box, or have it forwarded to a friend or your parents.  If you’ll be renting your home, it’s best not to let the mail pile up there!

9. Building and Connecting with the Expat Community

Living overseas can be isolating if you don’t actively seek connection.  Especially if you do not speak the local language!  We have been lucky to have our landlord’s parents nearby, who speak English and have provided us with lots of recommendations, a history of the town, and the culture.  We have also connected with other expats who have relocated here through WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.

Without a roommate or friendly neighbors, here are more suggestions on how to connect in your new home overseas:

• Join Facebook groups
• Sign up for email newsletters from shops, visitor centers/tourist boards, and other places in your new town
• Find a coworking space if you are a remote worker
• Sign up for language classes
• Attend local events

Making connections with both expats and locals abroad can lead to new friendships, business opportunities, and a support system.

10. Start Small, Then Expand into Living Abroad More Permanently

You don’t need to bring everything with you and make a permanent move.  First, try it for a few weeks or a 3-month stay.  90 days is the maximum for Americans to stay in any EU country without a visa.  The same goes for Costa Rica or Nicaragua.  In Mexico, you can stay up to 6 months, 180 days without a visa!

Testing the waters may also be a great way to find a town you love and the perfect place to rent.

Leaving the U.S. for a life abroad may feel daunting, but breaking it down into actionable steps makes it achievable.  Define your motivation, secure remote income, pick the right destination, and take care of the essentials.  Then you’re free to focus on the more fun stuff!

Mallorca is easy to reach, whether you’re traveling from Europe or further abroad.  Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is located just a few kilometers outside Palma, the capital.  As one of Spain’s busiest airports, it receives direct flights from most European cities, including London, Paris, and Rome.  Seasonal routes also bring in travelers from the U.S. and beyond during the summer months.

If you’re already in Spain, ferries are another option.  Daily services connect Mallorca with Barcelona, Valencia, and Denia, as well as other Balearic Islands like Ibiza and Menorca.  Ferries are slower but can be convenient if you’re traveling with a car and pets.  If you’re traveling by plane, renting a car is highly recommended once on the island for easy access to hiking, beaches, and remote villages that aren’t well-served by public transport.

When searching to make your travel arrangements, be aware that Mallorca may also appear written as Majorca or Maiorca, but they are all the same island.

What Makes the Dolomites Special?

Before we dive into the adventures, it’s important to know a little about the history of the Dolomites and why this region has a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.

The moment you arrive in the Dolomites, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a world apart from the rest of Italy.  The architecture has a storybook alpine charm. The food blends hearty mountain flavors with Italian and Tyrolean traditions.  You’ll also hear three languages: Italian, German, and Ladin or Ladino.

Much of this distinct character comes from the Dolomites’ history and geography.  The rugged peaks once kept villages isolated.  Locals farmed, raised livestock, and learned to thrive in the harsh alpine climate (many towns sit at 5,000 feet or higher).  For centuries, the area was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and even today the German influence is woven into daily life—from the menus in mountain huts to the signs along winding roads.  Ladin, an ancient language, is still spoken proudly in some valleys, preserving a culture that’s endured through centuries.

Although the Dolomites officially became part of Italy in 1919, after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the region’s blend of Italian passion and Austrian precision continues to make it one of the most fascinating cultural crossroads in Europe.

Regional Names and Languages Spoken in the Dolomites

The Dolomites area was called ‘Tyrol’ or ‘Tirol County’ by the Holy Roman Empire.  Tyrol or South Tyrol is still used, and Tyrolean architecture and food dominate the region.  In addition, the Ladin language, or ‘Ladino’, and the farming culture have been preserved through the centuries.

When you visit, you will see signs in Italian, Ladin, and German.  All three languages are spoken here and are the official languages of the region.  We’ll use both the Ladin and Italian names for places throughout this blog when possible.

Lastly, in case you are wondering how the Dolomites got their name, it’s thanks to French geologist Déodat de Dolomieu, who first identified the rocky mineral ‘dolomite’ in the 18th century.  Dolomite is similar to limestone, with a striking pale and jagged appearance.  It creates a dramatic landscape when complemented by shimmering alpine lakes, quaint Tyrolean villages, and meadows dotted with cows and sheep.

Dolomites Adventure Travel Tips: How to Get There

The Dolomites are part of the Alps and are located in northeastern Italy.  Within a few hours, you can reach the borders of Austria, Switzerland, and Germany.

If you plan to fly to begin your Dolomites adventure travel, there are several international airports nearby:

• Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) – 2.5 hours
• Milan Malpensa (MXP)- 4-4.5 hours
• Innsbruck Airport (INN) – Located in Austria, 2 hrs
• Munich Airport (MUC)- Located in Germany, 3.5 hrs

In addition, there are also smaller airports like Verona (VRN), Treviso (TSF), and Bolzano (BZO), which are perfect if you’re coming from nearby EU countries or London and the UK.  The closest airport to the Dolomites is in Bolzano, which is about 22 miles or 40 minutes away.

From all major airports, renting a car is the best way to get around.  Public transportation can be limited in towns like Val Gardena, Canazei, Castelrotto, and Alta Badia.  Even Cortina d’Ampezzo does not have a dedicated train line!  This proved challenging during the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics, as parking is very limited in Cortina.

Speaking of trains, there is service close to the Dolomites region from cities like Rome, Venice, and Milan to Bolzano.  However, you’ll have to take a bus, hire a tour guide, or rent a car to explore deeper.  If you are interested in arriving by train, you’ll want to book tickets to one of the following stations:

• Bolzano/Bolzen, if coming from Rome, Milan, or other points south and west
• Bressanone or Dobbiaco, if you’re coming from Germany, Switzerland, or Austria
• Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore-Cortina– if arriving from Venice

There are several direct bus lines that serve the Dolomiti region.  For example, from Venice’s Marco Polo airport, you can board the FlixBus, ATVO, or Cortina Express.  Each line has several departures per day that take you directly to Cortina d’Ampezzo.

If you’re looking for more scenic train travel, check out the Glacier Express, which goes from Zermatt to St. Moritz, or the Bernina Express.  This beautiful scenic train ride crosses 196 bridges and 55 tunnels through the Swiss Alps from St. Moritz to Tirano, Italy!

Hiking along the Seceda ridgeline is not for the faint of heart, but you’ll be rewarded with incredible views, even if the foggy mist rises up from the valley below!

1. Explore the Seceda Ridgeline and Val Gardena

First up in our Dolomites adventure travel itinerary is to hike around the iconic peaks of the Val Gardena region, the most notable being the Seceda ridgeline above Ortisei.  The easiest way to reach Seceda is via the Ortisei-Furnes-Seceda cable car, which departs from Ortisei in Val Gardena and takes you up to 2,500 meters in just minutes!  Once at the top, you’ll find a stunning network of hiking trails, from easy panoramic walks to more challenging treks in the Puez-Odle Nature Park.

As Seceda is one of the most popular destinations in the Dolomites, here are some insider tips to explore the area without having to wait in lines or feel like cattle following the herd.  Instead of taking the Ortisei-Furnes-Seceda cable car, park at the Col Raiser gondola station.  At the top of the Col Raiser, you can access the Puez-Odle Nature Park and Seceda by hiking up through the rolling alpine meadows.  Another great option is to park at Cristauta above Santa Cristina and hike up to the cross at Sëurasas and then onto Seceda.

Whether you head straight to the Seceda summit or opt for Col Raiser or Sëurasas, warm, inviting rifugios dot the alpine landscape.  Our favorite family-run refugio off the beaten path is the Baita Sëurasas Hutte.  Here, you’ll have no problem getting a table or a lounge chair, and can peacefully enjoy the delicious South Tyrolean cuisine with breathtaking views across Val Gardena to Sassolungo!  The more popular spots, such as Baita Sofie Hütte and Baita Daniel Hütte, also offer cozy alpine hospitality but can be crowded in the summer months.

Whether you visit in summer for hiking or winter for skiing, the Seceda and peaks around Val Gardena offer spectacular vistas across the entire Dolomites.

2. Go Hiking and Rock Climbing at Cinque Torri

The Dolomites are a legendary hiking and climbing destination that attracts visitors from around the world.  Here you’ll find thousands of trails, along with climbing routes ranging from beginner-friendly to expert-only.  Many climbs date back to the early 1900s, with famous climbers like Reinhold Messner, Emilio Comici, and other pioneers setting challenging routes.

One of the most popular areas for hiking and climbing in the Dolomites is Cinque Torri.  Cinque Torri is a stunning rock formation known for its towering spires that attract hikers, climbers, and history enthusiasts.  The rock is dolomite or limestone in most areas, meaning big pockets, sharp edges, and lots of interesting features.  In addition, this area is also famous for its WWI open-air ‘museum’, featuring restored trenches and military outposts from the war.

To get there, take the Cinque Torri chairlift from the Bai de Dones parking area, just a 20-minute drive from Cortina d’Ampezzo.  Once you reach the top, you’ll arrive at Rifugio Scoiattoli.  From here, it’s a few minutes’ walk on a gently sloping path with spectacular alpine scenery to reach Cinque Torri.

The trails around Cinque Torri offer breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks, including Tofane and the Lagazuoi Massif.  Whether you’re hiking, climbing, or simply enjoying the views, Cinque Torri is a must-visit in the Dolomites!  As Cinque Torri is quite popular and can become crowded in the summer, quieter climbing and hiking areas include:

• Vallunga/Langetal- In Val Gardena, easy sport climbing and hiking
• Passo Falzarego- Great hiking and climbing
• Marmolada- Good for experienced big wall climbers
• Tre Cime di Lavaredo- Multi-pitch alpine routes

If you want to try rock climbing in the Dolomites and are new to the sport, hire a guide.  Most towns offer guiding services, like Val Gardena Mountain Guides, Alta Badia Guides, or Guide Alpine Cortina.  Going with a guide means they’ll take care of the gear, ensure the route selection is within your abilities, and you won’t get lost!

3. Ski the Sella Ronda

One of the most famous circuits in the Dolomites, the Sella Ronda, takes you on a breathtaking ski loop around the Sella Massif.  The Sella Ronda route connects four major ski resort towns: Val Gardena, Corvara in Alta Badia, Arabba, and Canazei/Val di Fassa.  You can ride the Sella Ronda clockwise (orange route) or counter-clockwise (green route), and there is signage at each resort to help you find your way.

You will need a Dolomiti Superski pass, and be prepared for a long day.  However, the Sella Ronda passes mountain refugios at the top of the climbs and the villages in the valleys, so you’ll always have a place to stop, rest, and refuel.

With over 1,200 kilometers of ski slopes and 450 lifts, Dolomiti Superski is one of the largest ski areas in the world and includes many other resorts besides the four mentioned above. Whether you’re carving down perfectly groomed runs or exploring off-piste terrain, this interconnected network of resorts offers something for every level of skier.  In addition, the slopes around Cortina d’Ampezzo are on the Dolomiti Superski!

Sella Ronda Distance: 25 miles/ 40 km
Elevation Gain/Loss: 7,800ft (2,400m) descent; you’ll get uphill by ski lift/cable car
Time Required: 4–6 hours (without long breaks)
Difficulty: Intermediate (some red runs, no black runs required)

The Dolomite Superski gives you access to over 12 ski resorts, 16 ski areas, 450 lifts, and incredible views around every turn!

4. Explore by Bicycle on Your Dolomites Adventure Travels

Cycling in the Dolomites is filled with exhilarating climbs and descents that take your breath away.  There are plenty of bike shops throughout the Dolomites, Intersport and On the Rocks in Val Gardena, or 2ue&2ue in Cortina d’Ampezzo.  You can rent a road bike, gravel bike, or e-bike, a helmet, and pick up any other gear you might have left at home.

You can also ride the Sella Ronda (mentioned above) by bike and loop around the roads that connect each valley of the Sella Group- Val Gardena, Corvara in Alta Badia, Arabba, and Canazei/Val di Fassa.  If you choose to do the Sella Ronda bike route, here are the details for the road bike route only:

Distance: 36 miles/ 58km- start in any of the 4 valleys/resorts
Elevation Gain/Loss: 5,900ft ascending (1,800m), 5,900ft descending (1,800m)
Time Required: 4–6 hours (depending on fitness level)
Difficulty: Challenging (steep climbs/descents, high altitude)

Cycling without Car Traffic and Steep Climbing

Besides cycling the Sella Ronda, which you can ride almost all year round (when the roads are clear of snow), don’t miss the times when they are also free from car traffic!  These include the Maratona dles Dolomites, a famous cycling event in July, Dolomiti Bike Day, and the Sella Ronda Bike Day is a car-free day for cyclists held twice a year, in June and September.

Lastly, if you are searching for routes that are flat AND free from car traffic, there are not many in the Dolomiti. Separate bike paths, paved and gravel, include rides from:

• Bolzano to Chiusa and Bressanone
• San Vito di Cadore to Cortina and Dobbiaco
• Ortisei to Selva

5. Visit Lago di Braies, Lago Sorapis, and the Dolomiti Lakes Region

No Dolomites trip is complete without visiting its picturesque alpine lakes, and Lago di Braies or Pragser Wildsee is at  the top of everyone’s list.  With its stunning emerald waters reflecting the wild mountain peaks, Lago di Braies can be packed in the summertime, so plan to visit early in the morning.

Another Dolomiti lake that tops everyone’s list is often Lago di Sorapis.  This lake is different than Lago di Braies as you cannot simply drive up and park in a giant parking lot.  Instead, you have to park at Passo Tre Croci and hike in to reach Lago di Sorapis.  The round-trip hike is about 7-8 miles (11-13km) and takes about 4-5 hours to complete.

The hike to Lago di Sorapis is an extremely popular hike, so plan to arrive early to get parking, and avoid hiking in the middle of summer.  The crowds on the trail, plus the summer heat, make the hike to Lago di Sorapis not only challenging but also dangerous.

While visiting the lakes of the Dolomites, rent a rowboat, a kayak, or hike the loop around the lake.  Swimming is not allowed in Lago di Braies, Lago di Sorapis, and many others to maintain their pristine condition. In addition, most Dolomiti alpine lakes barely get to 60 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, so it would not make for a fun swim.

Other beautiful, and less crowded alpine lakes to add to your Dolomites adventure travel itinerary include:

• Lago di Misurina
• Lago di Dobbiaco (our favorite near Cortina)
• Lago di Landro (you can swim here!)
• Lago Federa and Croda da Lago (hike in from Malga Federa)
• Spiaggia Verde (literally the ‘green beach’- you can sunbathe and swim in the river!)

6. Climb a Dolomiti Via Ferrata

The Dolomites are home to an extensive network of via ferratas, and this is one of our favorite things to do during our Dolomites adventure travels!  A via ferrata (Italian for “iron path”) is a climbing route equipped with steel cables, ladders, and iron rungs.  While you ascend rocks the way a rock climber would, via ferratas differ in that they have protection already in place.  You will, however, need to wear a climbing harness and use a special lanyard system, like the Petzl Scorpio, when climbing a via ferrata.

Via ferratas were originally built during World War I in the Dolomites to help soldiers move through the mountains.  Along the routes, you’ll find old war bunkers, trenches, tunnels, and signage about the battles fought.  Today, more routes have been added to offer an exciting mix of climbing and hiking, making alpine peaks accessible to adventurous travelers.

If you’ve never done a via ferrata before and you are not a climber, go with a guide.  They can provide gear and navigation, and you will learn the techniques of climbing a via ferrata.  Here’s our favorite Dolomiti via ferratas to include in your adventure travel plans:

Via Ferrata Tridentina- Sella Group

The Via Ferrata Tridentina is a classic, offering spectacular views from the Refugio Pisciadù and a suspension bridge.
Location: Alta Badia, Sella Group
Time: 3-4 hours
Effort: Moderate

Via Ferrata Piz da Cir

Via Ferrata Piz da Cir is a short but scenic route in the Puez–Odle group of the Dolomites, perfect for those seeking a half-day adventure. The trailhead starts at Passo Gardena (2,121 m), but is easily reached by taking the Dantercepies cable car.  An uphill hike of about 20 minutes from the refugio at the top of the cable car brings you to the base of the via ferrata.

Location: Val Gardena Pass/ Sella Group
Time: 1.5-2 hours
Effort: Easy to moderate. Suitable for fit beginners or as a warm-up for more challenging routes!

Via Ferrata Ra Pegna, Ra Bujela and Olivieri in Cortina

There are extensive networks of via ferratas around Cortina, and these are often the most easily accessible and scenic routes.

Location: Near Cortina on the Tofane (use ski lifts to access)
Time: 1 hour for Ra Pegna and Ra Bujela, 2 hours for via ferrata Olivieri
Effort: Ra Pegna and Ra Bujela are easy, perfect for beginners. Olivieri is more challenging and exposed.

One of the most photographed lakes of the Dolomites, Lago di Braies, is on every traveler’s list! In the winter, it’s covered in snow, but in the summer, you can rent a boat and paddle around the lake.

7. Go Mountain Biking: The Sella Ronda or Dolomiti Bike Parks

Riding the Sella Ronda by mountain bike is one of our favorite adventures of our Dolomites travels!  We rented bikes and helmets at Intersport in Val Gardena; however, there are several bike shops in each town along the route.  Make sure to pick up a Sella Ronda MTB map at the bike shop and buy a Dolomiti Supersummer Pass.  Plan your day, leave extra time for stops, and avoid getting stuck when the lifts close for the day.

If you want to make it harder, you can ride uphill instead of taking a lift, but we recommend taking the ski lifts or cable cars.  Then you can truly enjoy the sweeping descents as you plummet thousands of feet into the valleys below!

Distance: 36 miles/58km
Elevation Gain/Loss: 1,500ft (450m) gained (mostly you’ll take lifts), 13,629ft descending!!
Time Required: 6-8 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

Besides cycling the Sella Ronda, there are lots of flow trails and groomed bike parks in the Dolomites.  Many ski lifts and gondolas will accommodate mountain bikes, so you can take the lifts up and enjoy lapping the big descents all day!

8. Hike the Tre Cime Lavaredo Loop

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo Loop is one of the most iconic hikes in the Dolomites, with breathtaking views of the famous three towering peaks.  This moderate 6.2-mile (10km) loop takes about 3-4 hours to complete and starts from Rifugio Auronzo, which is accessible by car or shuttle bus from Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The well-marked trail winds past Rifugio Lavaredo and climbs to Forcella Lavaredo, where you’ll get stunning close-up views of the Tre Cime’s north faces.  Continuing around the loop, you’ll pass Rifugio Locatelli, an excellent stop for a meal with panoramic vistas.  This hike is best done in early summer (May-July) and then again in the fall when the trails are clear of snow.  In August, the Tre Cime Lavaredo area is packed, and a reservation is needed to get a parking spot!

There are so many things to do in the Dolomites, but sometimes just sitting and watching the cows in Alpe d’Suisi is enough for me! Stay at least a few nights at an Agriturismo to learn about the farming culture practiced for centuries.

9. Visit Alpe di Siusi-Seiser Alm

Visiting Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), Europe’s largest high alpine meadow, is a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.  This vast plateau offers breathtaking views of the Sassolungo and Sciliar peaks, and lush green pastures dotted with traditional wooden huts.

You can reach Alpe di Siusi by cable car from Ortisei (St. Ulrich) or Castelrotto (Kastelruth).  Private cars are restricted in Alpe di Siusi during peak hours unless you’re a resident, to help preserve this pristine landscape.

In summer, Alpe di Siusi is a paradise for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, while in winter, it transforms into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing wonderland.  The area is home to charming rifugios where you can enjoy local South Tyrolean specialties like speck, dumplings, and apple strudel while soaking in the stunning alpine scenery.

10. Take the Cable Car to Sassolungo/Langkofel

Taking the cable car up to Sassolungo (Langkofel) is an incredible way to experience the heart of the Dolomites, and I think we saved the best for last.  The Forcella Sassolungo lift, a unique two-person standing cable car, departs from Passo Sella and ascends to Forcella del Sassolungo at 8,796ft (2,681m).  The ride itself is an adventure; just getting into the cable car is an adventure!! 

At the top, you can explore Rifugio Toni Demetz, a cozy mountain hut with spectacular panoramas and delicious local food.  From here, hikers can descend into the Sassolungo Group or continue to the Friedrich August trail for a stunning trek along the ridgeline.

There’s also great rock climbing at Sassolungo, including a via ferrata, or nearby at the Città di Sassi.  Whether you’re a hiker, climber, or simply want to enjoy the views, traveling in the Sassolungo cable car is a must-do in the Dolomites!

From Val Gardena, take the tiny cable car up to the top of the Sassolungo and enjoy the views from the Rifugio Toni Demetz!

Where to Stay During Your Dolomites Travels

The villages of the Dolomites are a mix of traditional alpine mountain towns, charming ski resorts, and small rural settlements that blend Italian, Austrian, and Ladin cultures.  Many have a Tyrolean feel, with wooden chalets, frescoed churches, and pedestrian walkways closed to car traffic.

In addition, if you’re buying a Dolomiti Superski or Supersummer Pass, ensure the towns you’re visiting are on the pass.  There are so many Dolomiti villages and 12 ski resorts to choose from!  Here are the best Dolomites towns to use as a base for exploring the area:

1. Cortina d’Ampezzo:

A premier luxury resort town close to Cinque Torre, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Lago Misurina, and Lago di Braies.  The 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics featured several events on the slopes of Cortina!

2. Ortisei/St. Ulrich, Selva/Wolkenstein, or Santa Cristina (Val Gardena):

The Val Gardena towns of Selva, Ortisei, and Santa Cristina offer access to Alpe di Suisi, the Sella Ronda, and the famous Seceda ridgeline.

3. Alta Badia:

The Dolomites quieter, yet more central locations for skiing and mountain biking, with access to the Sella Ronda, include towns in Alta Badia like San Cassiano, Badia, Villa, and Corvara.

4. Canazei (Val di Fassa):

Canazei is a charming ski town with access to the Sella Ronda and the entire Val di Fassa region.

Mountain Rifugios & Agriturismos

In addition to the Dolomites villages we’ve highlighted, we highly recommend booking a night or two at a mountain refugio (or rifugio).  The refugios are often accessible by ski lift, cable car, or by hiking up from the valley.  Most refugios will offer meals, accommodations, and a well-stocked bar.  They’ll also have nice open spaces both inside and outside to relax.  There is no central booking system for the Dolomites refugios.  Your best bet is to find a refugio close to the town you want to explore, then look up their website for more information on booking a night.

We have stayed at the Rifugio Scoiattoli at Cinque Torri, which allowed us more time without tourists to hike and climb in the Cinque Torri area.  We spent evenings there watching the sunset, enjoying an Aperol spritz while the last hikers departed downhill and the goats and sheep slowly made their way up.  It was like a fairy tale.

In addition to staying at a mountain rifugio, experience traditional Ladin and farming culture by spending a night at an Agriturismo (Agriturismi).  We spent a week at the Larciunëi de Sot in Selva Val Gardena and had the chance to meet all the animals, plus we had fresh eggs, milk, and bread delivered to our apartment daily!

The views from Rifugio Scoiattoli at Cinque Torri are simply unbelievable! Whether summer or wintertime, staying at a refugio is one of the best ways to experience the Dolomites!

Skiing the Venues of the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics

Skiing or snowboarding at the venues featured during the 2026 Winter Olympics & Paralympics in Milano-Cortina is an unforgettable experience.  Cortina d’Ampezzo hosted key events like Alpine Skiing, Bobsled, Luge, Curling, and both Para Skiing and Para Snowboarding.

An hour from Cortina, you’ll find even more Olympic venues: Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, and Cross-Country Skiing were held near Predazzo in Val di Fiemme.  Then, north of Cortina, the biathlon took place in Anterselva (Antholz).

Final Thoughts on Planning a Dolomites Adventure Travel Itinerary

The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most stunning mountain ranges in the world.  From dramatic peaks, pristine alpine lakes, and world-class outdoor activities, the Dolomites are a dream destination for adventure travelers, and it’s why we’ve chosen to call this place home.

With majestic views just outside your doorstep and trails suitable for all levels, everyone can enjoy the outdoors in the Dolomites.  In addition, many high alpine trails can be easily accessed from towns throughout the Dolomites thanks to an abundance of gondolas and cable cars.  Keep in mind, gondolas and ski lifts close at the end of the ski season (late March- early April), and then reopen in May/June until the end of September for summertime activities.

Even if you’re not up for a big hike, taking a cable car up to one of the many mountain-top refugios can be quite exhilarating and an adventure in itself.

The rise of the digital nomad visa has opened new opportunities for Americans.  So if you’ve been considering a move to Europe and can work remotely, we’ve packed this blog with the truth of what it takes to apply for a digital nomad visa.

We do not want to sugar-coat the amount of time and effort you’ll need to invest in this process.  Many blogs gloss over the stack of documents you need to present at your visa appointment, if you can even get an appointment!  From tax returns to notarized diplomas and transcripts, proof of international health insurance, and a registered rental contract, the documents you need to submit can be overwhelming.  It was for me.  Start the process VERY early, 6-9 months before you’d like to arrive in Europe.

In this blog, I’ll guide you through the steps to becoming a digital nomad in the EU, with a special focus on Italy’s digital nomad visa process.  We just finished this process and have our visas.  Yes, Top Rope Media is going global!  We’ve lived and worked abroad, but this time feels different and much more labor-intensive.

I’ve included lots of action items (did I mention this is a long process?), handy links, things to consider, and all the tools we’ve used so far to apply for a digital nomad visa.  So andiamo, let’s go!

1. The Surge of the Digital Nomad Visa

The ability to work remotely and be a digital nomad became very popular during the pandemic.  More people could work from home, or remotely, as long as they had a good wifi connection.  In 2023, 17.3 million Americans identified as digital nomads, up 131% from 2019!  While not all remote workers apply for digital nomad visas, the number of applicants has grown.  In addition, 67 countries now offer a digital nomad visa, indicating a strong demand worldwide.

The surge in visa applications from America for EU countries can be attributed to a combination of political, economic, and quality-of-life factors.  The chance to travel and work without the high cost of living, healthcare, gasoline, or food?  Combine good old inflation with the current political climate, and many of us are ready to pack our bags!

Why is the European Union (EU) a top destination for digital nomads?  Besides an escape from your everyday, it offers the opportunity to experience different cultures, languages, food, and perhaps a higher quality of life.  However, making the leap to being a remote worker in the EU requires careful planning, especially when applying for a digital nomad visa.

2. Choosing Which Country to Apply for Your Digital Nomad Visa

While many EU countries offer digital nomad visas for Americans, three countries stand out for their benefits, cost of living, and beauty:

Italy

Known for its rich culture, world-class cuisine, and relaxed lifestyle, Italy introduced a 1-year digital nomad visa in April 2024. It’s an attractive option for remote workers, but Italy’s visa requirements are stringent. For instance, you must be highly skilled, and show proof of your professional qualifications, among many other items.

Portugal

A favorite among expats, Portugal began offering a digital nomad visa in October 2022. With tax incentives and an affordable cost of living, especially in cities like Lisbon and Porto, Portugal allows remote workers to relocate for 1-2 years.

Spain

Spain launched its digital nomad visa in January 2023, allowing non-EU remote workers and freelancers to live in Spain while working for foreign companies. With a mix of vibrant cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, and Bilbao, a warm climate, and peaceful coastal retreats, Spain is high on everyone’s list!

Besides Italy, Spain, and Portugal, other popular EU countries where you can apply for a digital nomad visa include Greece, Croatia, Malta, and Hungary.  Many other countries offer long-stay visas, but not specifically a digital nomad or remote worker visa. Why We Chose Italy

After you decide which country you plan to do your remote work in, visit their Consulate’s website to learn about the visa application process for Americans.  We chose Italy and began our process at the Italian Consulate in Los Angeles, on the Digital Nomad/Remote Workers Visa page. 

We chose to work remotely in Italy for several reasons:

1. We have lived in Italy before, for 4 months during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino!
2. My grandparents on my father’s side immigrated to America from Southern Italy – I even wrote a book with my Dad about their journey! 
3. We love the Dolomite region and its easy access to skiing, hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking.
4. The Winter Olympics will be back in Italy in February 2026 in Milano-Cortina!
5. We are passionate about cycling and soccer (aka football) the two biggest sports in Italy.
6. The Italians take it slow and practice La Dolce Far Niente (The Sweetness of Doing Nothing) better than anyone else!

Rock climbing and mountaineering are some of our favorite activities, and the Alps and Dolomites are the birthplaces of these sports!

3. Digital Nomad Visa Application

Europe’s digital nomad visas are designed for Americans and other non-EU remote workers.  Once your visa application is approved, you can stay for up to a year in the ‘Schengen’ – meaning any country in the European Union.  In addition, most countries will let you renew your visa each year without needing to return to the U.S.

To apply for a digital nomad visa, you’ll need to begin the process in the U.S. and find the closest Consulate to where you live, and based on the EU country you’ll be applying to.  Each visa application process will be slightly different, but be prepared to gather a stack of documents.  I’m not kidding here.

Start to gather the following (we’ll dive more into some of these items below):

1. Identification: A valid passport that does not expire until well after your intended stay
2. Proof you live in the Consulate’s Jurisdiction: Driver’s license
3. A completed Visa Application & Passport Photo: Here’s the Italian National Visa Form
4. Prove you are a Highly Skilled Worker: Submit diplomas, transcripts, certifications, licenses first to the Education Office to get a Declaration of Value.
5. Proof of your Employment: contract from employer, pay stubs, invoices, business ownership
6. Proof that you Meet the Minimum Income Requirements: €2,500/mo per person, shown in personal bank statements
7. Proof of Accommodation: a 12-month rental contract, filed with the Italian Tax Authority
8. International Health Insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical expenses
9. A Clean Criminal Record: fingerprints and background checks are done at the office
10. A Fiscal Code or Codice Fiscale
11. A Booked Flight to Your Destination: Get a refundable/changeable ticket
12. A Postage Paid Return Envelope (USPS Priority Mail) for them to mail your passport back to you once your visa is approved
13. Visa fees– a cashier’s check, cash or money order

The full description of everything you’ll need for an Italian digital nomad visa application can be found on the Digital Nomad/Remote Workers Visa page on the Italian Consulate in Los Angeles’ website.  Once you are close to having all of your documents in order, book a visa appointment.

Getting a Visa Appointment

Italy’s visa appointments can be booked through the Prenot@mi website, which literally means ‘book me’ or reserve me’ in Italian, and are VERY hard to get.  It is not uncommon to wait 6 weeks for an appointment!  I refreshed the Italian Consulate appointment website, Prenotami, at least a dozen times a day!  Try in the afternoons, between 2-3pm, as cancellations are often added at midnight Rome time.

Begin by creating an account for each person (even as a married couple, you will each need an appointment).  The Prenot@mi website also provides details on the application process and documents needed based on the type of visa you are applying for: Digital Nomad Visa, Elective Residency Visa, etc.

Keep in mind, each country will have a different process to schedule a visa appointment.  Below are tips specifically for the Italian Consulate:

• Wait time for visa appointments on Prenot@mi is 4-6 weeks
• At 3:00 p.m. Rome time (ECT) cancellations and new booking days/times open
• Log in a few minutes before 3pm ECT and have your documents ready
• Refresh the page repeatedly!

Persistence pays off when you are attempting to get an appointment at the Italian Consulate through the Prenot@mi website.  If you don’t see any appointments right away, keep checking daily.  The Consulate only takes visa appointments on certain days and for a very limited amount of time.  Cancellations can open brief windows of opportunity!

We began our application process in January, and after four appointments at the Italian Consulate, we finally received our 1-year visas in May.  Expect an intense process.  Lots of questions about your intent and financial capacity to sustain yourself.  Bring every single document you think you may need!

Pro tip: Make a copy of your visa application packet BEFORE you submit it.  You will often need to resubmit the same documents for your residency permit.  For Italy, you must apply for the Permesso di Soggiorno, or residency permit, within 8 days of arriving in Italy.

Rules for visa applications can change, so try to be patient and don’t expect things to move fast.  I found out the hard way at my first visa appointment, and I wrote this blog to help others prepare.  While you can use an Italian immigration attorney or someone very familiar with the process for your particular country to complete the application, you will still need to secure an appointment.  Hiring an immigration lawyer certainly does not guarantee you will get approved, but it might save you some time and relieve some stress!

4. How to Find a Place to Live to Satisfy Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

To meet the Italian Consulate’s visa application requirements, you must provide proof of long-term accommodation.  In addition, it must cover the entire length of your visa, the rental contract must be exactly like the example featured on their website, and it must be registered with the Italian Tax Authority- the Agenzia della Entrate.  Many other digital nomad EU visa applications will have the same requirement, and this is often the most challenging part of your visa application process.  Crashing on a friend’s couch will not suffice.

Start browsing long-term rental websites that list homes and apartments available for more than 30 days in the country you’d like to relocate to.  Here are a few rental listing websites we’ve been using for Italy.  In addition, some of these websites have listings or separate websites for other countries.

Websites for Long-term Rentals in Italy:

• Immobiliare.it
• Casa.it
• Idealista.it
• Spotahome
• Tuttocasa.it
• Casadaprivato.it

Using VRBO or Airbnb to Find a Long-Term Rental

While you can use VRBO or Airbnb, you will need to transition to a long-term lease.  In addition, the Italian Consulate will not accept say a 3-month rental booking on Airbnb, which would not cover your full visa stay and is not registered with the Italian Tax Authority- Agenzia della Entrate.

Keep in mind, while Airbnb or VRBO might seem to be the easiest, most secure option, you are subject to Airbnb’s fees and the higher short-term rental rates.  For example, we found a beautiful 2-bedroom, 1-bath in Cortina d’Ampezzo listed on Idealista.it for €3,500/month, yet on Airbnb it was €6,000/month!!

Lastly, when you search for a rental for a month or longer on Airbnb or VRBO, your search will not yield a lot of properties.  We found many owners list short-term stays only, hence why they use Airbnb!

Working With a Real Estate Agent or Real Estate Agency

You might also feel more comfortable working directly with a real estate ‘Immobiliare’ agent.  We began by building a list of real estate agents throughout the Dolomite region.  In addition, we found it very helpful that most real estate agencies will list properties for sale and for rent on their websites.  This is great if you are looking to develop a relationship with an agent for a potential home purchase later down the road!

Things to Consider During Your Long-Term Rental Search

We started using Immobiliare and Idealista to find an apartment that satisfies our Italian digital nomad visa application.  Once you begin using Immobiliare and Idealista, you can download the app to your phone, set up a profile, start your search, save your favorites, and use their chat/message tools to communicate with property managers.

We recommend you view properties in Google Maps, and ensure they meet your requirements for things like walkability to the city center, transportation, etc.  In addition, ensure the property description matches the photos, and they can offer you a monthly or annual rental contract.

You will notice some of the listings are managed by private individuals, and others by real estate agents.  Regardless of who you’re interacting with, keep the conversation light, do not exchange any personal information other than what you are looking for in an apartment or home, and do not make any payments or bank transfers outside the app. 

In addition, we’ve noticed some people will ask you to switch over to WhatsApp to continue the conversation.  Again, be very careful with the information you provide, and do not send any bank or credit card information!

Here are a few more steps to consider before you agree to a long-term rental contract and make a deposit:

• Can you hop on a video call, get to know the property owner, and ask questions?
• Is wifi included in the price? How about heat, A/C, and electricity?
• Ensure there is language in the rental contract about their cancellation policy!
• How will you pay the rental deposit? Can you use PayPal, a credit card, or your bank?

Cities like Barcelona and Madrid are great home bases for digital nomads who want to explore Spain. We traveled to Montserrat from Barcelona to visit the monasteries, hike, and rock climb!

5. Getting International Health Insurance for a Digital Nomad Visa

An Italian digital nomad visa application requires you to have international health insurance.  International health insurance provides ongoing healthcare coverage rather than just trip interruption coverage and emergency care.

International health insurance is also different than your current U.S. healthcare policy, which often does not cover you outside the U.S.  Yes, you may be able to submit your receipts to get reimbursement, but the Italian Consulate will not accept a copy of your health insurance card as proper insurance coverage.

The number one reason for the denial of an Italian digital nomad visa application is the lack of appropriate health insurance.  Therefore, here are the top 5 International Health Insurance providers:

1. Cigna Global – Comprehensive international health plans tailored for expats.
2. SafetyWing – Affordable and designed for digital nomads, limited coverage.  Safety Wing was not accepted by the Italian Consulate in Los Angeles. 
3. Allianz Care – Flexible plans covering outpatient and emergency services only.
4. AXA Global Healthcare– Comprehensive coverage, expensive, but you can set a high deductible to keep monthly payments low.  This is the health insurance we decided to use.
5. GeoBlue by Blue Shield– Good coverage options, backed by a familiar brand, but they require you to keep your US Health insurance!

We have also read that once you have a residency permit, a Permesso di Soggiorno, you can opt into Italy’s national healthcare system (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale, or SSN) for a fee.  We’ll review getting a residency permit next!

6. Visa Approval Process: Be Patient and Persistent!

The digital nomad visa application process can take anywhere from 30-120 days, so start the process early!!  We learned that you may not meet all their requirements during your first appointment and will need to submit additional documentation at a follow-up appointment. Or three follow-up appointments!  The Italian Digital Nomad Visa is new, and a woman at the Italian Consulate in Los Angeles mentioned they had only processed 10 applications in 2024- and only 6 of them were approved!

Be patient with the process, and stay focused.  keep refreshing the Prenotami website for appointments! We had 3 appointments over 4 months before our visas were approved.  Lots of paperwork and sleepless nights, but when the lady at the Consulate finally approved us, I cried!  It felt simply amazing after all the work we’d done.

Often they will collect your passport at your final appointment, and mail it back to you with the visa stamped inside.  You are then ready to take the next step!

7. Getting a Residency Permit: Permesso di Soggiorno, in Italy

Within 8 days of arriving in Italy, you must apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno (residency permit) at the Questura or local police station.  Pick up an application packet at the Poste Italiane (post office) nearest you, and you will submit almost everything you submitted during your visa application process. Therefore, it might be a good idea to make an extra copy of your full visa application packet before you turn it in at the Consulate! 

Each EU country will be different, but almost all will require you that you apply for temporary or permanent residency once you arrive.  A Permesso di Soggiorno is required in Italy for all long-term stays.  It also gives you access to public services.  Once you submit the application for your Permesso di Soggiorno, it can often take months.  You’ll be able to check your application status on the Questura’s website.  But good news, you can renew your visa/Permesso di Soggiorno in Italy.  You will not need to return to the U.S. and go through the whole visa application process again!  Each EU country is different, so be sure to check the requirements for extending your stay.

We lived in Athens during the 2004 Summer Olympics and found it easy to get around, pick up a bit of the language, and eat all the Greek food we wanted!

8. Buying or Renting a Car as a Digital Nomad

If you haven’t spent much time in Europe, you’ll learn quickly that public transportation is excellent in most cities.  Especially when compared to the U.S. transportation infrastructure.  There are high-speed trains, buses, and in our case in the Dolomites, ski lifts, and cable cars that allow you to move between different towns!  A car isn’t necessary unless you’re in a small town or rural area.

If you plan to drive while living abroad, you can use your home country’s license with an International Driving Permit (IDP).  Plan to stay longer and renew your digital nomad visa after one year?  Take the country’s driving test to avoid penalties!

If you want to buy a car, consult your Consulate’s website for more information.  For Italy, you need a residency permit, the Permesso di Soggiorno, and an Italian tax code, the Codice Fiscale, to purchase a vehicle.

9. Setting Up a Bank Account

To receive payments, pay rent, and manage finances while in the EU, you’ll most likely need a local bank account.  The best options in Italy include traditional banks like UniCredit and Intesa Sanpaolo, which require in-person visits and more paperwork.

However, online banks like N26, Wise, and Revolut are easier for non-residents and digital nomads.  In addition, Citibank, Bank of America, and Chase have locations in Milan and Rome, as well as throughout Europe!

Living in a larger city like Athens, Milan, or Rome makes it easier to get around without a car, and find banks, post offices, and many other services you’ll need to establish residency and begin work.

10. Getting a SIM Card and Receiving Mail as a Digital Nomad

If you want to get a local phone number, get a SIM card when you arrive.  Italian SIM card providers include:

• TIM (best coverage)
• Vodafone (good for international calling)
• Iliad (budget-friendly, no contracts)

In addition, your current phone, as long as it’s unlocked from your carrier, may have an eSim.  This makes things even easier as you can buy an eSim from Nomad or SimOptions, to name a few, and simply toggle between both SIM ‘cards’ on your same phone.

You can also plan to use WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family, use Google Meet for work calls, and you might also consider getting a VPN- a virtual private network.  We use Express VPN.

To receive mail and packages while living abroad, you’ll likely need to set up a P.O. Box.  In Italy, you can rent a Casella Postale (PO Box) at Poste Italiane.  You can also ask your property manager if packages and mail can be sent to your new address, and then establish this as your address at the local post office.

11. Understanding Taxes and Legal Responsibilities While on a Digital Nomad Visa

Ask your tax advisor what you are legally responsible for while working remotely in the EU.  For example, if you stay in Italy for more than 183 days per year, you become a tax resident and must pay taxes on worldwide income.  That means you are taxed on the income you make from your U.S. clients while abroad.  In addition, you will pay taxes on any Italy-sourced income from local businesses you may begin to work with in Italy.  Italy’s tax rate is higher than the U.S., averaging 23-43%! 

However, Italy offers tax incentives for new residents, highly skilled workers, or high-net-worth individuals who relocate to Italy.  In addition, if you are already paying taxes on your income in America, you may be exempt due to their double taxation treaties.  Learn more on the Agencia de Entrate (Italian Tax Authority) website.

Before you depart, consult a tax expert to optimize your tax situation and ensure compliance while on a digital nomad visa.

Final Thoughts on Digital Nomad Visas and Working Remotely in Europe

Being a digital nomad in Europe can allow you to explore beautiful cities, idyllic countryside hamlets, and enjoy world-class cuisine.  However, the visa application process is long, it’s hard, and you should not assume you will get approved simply because you’re a remote worker or freelancer.  If it were that easy, everyone would do it.

Why Ecuador is a Biodiversity Hot Spot

Ecuador’s exceptional biodiversity comes from its unique geographic location.  This small South American country spans the equator (yes, you can visit the Mitad del Mundo- the center of the world just north of Quito!), the rugged Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest, and the often desert-like Pacific coast.  Finally, there are isolated islands of the Galápagos, where you can see animals found nowhere else on Earth!

A Rich History Shaped by Ancient Civilizations and Spanish Colonization

Before the Inca Empire took hold, over a dozen indigenous cultures thrived in Ecuador.  The Quechua was the largest tribe and lived in the Andes mountain range.  Each indigenous tribe maintained traditional customs and languages and farmed the lands as their ancestors had for centuries.  The Inca civilization rose to power in 1463, however, their reign only lasted until the Spanish arrived in the mid-1500s, leading to nearly 300 years of colonial rule.

Spanish conquistadores and missionaries subdued the native communities, converted many Ecuadorians to Christianity, and subjected them to forced labor.  The Spanish built churches over ancient temples and sacred spaces to establish dominance and facilitate the spread of Christianity.  In addition, since the indigenous tribes had no immunity to diseases like smallpox, this led to a significant decline in their population.

Ecuador gained independence from Spain in 1822 and today celebrates both its indigenous roots and colonial influences.  We recommend booking a city or cultural walking tour when you arrive in Quito.  Connect with Jhonatan Quitilanda at Bacan Ecuador Tours to set up a private or group tour.  Jhonatan met us at our hotel, and as we walked, he revealed the area’s deep traditions and cultural importance.

Getting to Ecuador: Fly into Quito or Guayaquil

International flights to Ecuador will land in two major cities: Quito and Guayaquil.  Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) is ideal for travelers who want to explore the Andes mountains and the Amazon. Guayaquil’s José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) is a bustling modern city, with an industrious coastal port that serves as a gateway to the Galapagos Islands.  We learned quickly upon researching our trip that many travelers to Ecuador head straight to the Galapagos Islands and never leave the airport to visit mainland Ecuador.  What an absolute shame!  I vowed that our trip and the writing of this blog would help to promote the best outdoor activities in Ecuador in areas other than the Galapagos.

We flew into Quito to spend more time in the Andes and the Amazon.  Quito is located at 9,000ft., it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its historic center is one of the largest and best-preserved colonial centers in Latin America!  The city’s historic district is characterized by beautiful baroque architecture, charming plazas, and churches that showcase a blend of European and indigenous influences.

Travel tip: From Quito, you can drive an hour north to the town of Otavalo, known for its vibrant indigenous market!

Getting Around Ecuador: Private Shuttles, Tours, and Car Rentals

Once you arrive in Ecuador, you can easily find a taxi, private car, or a shuttle to bring you to your accommodations.  You can also book in advance through your hotel or adventure tour operator to have someone meet you at the airport.  In addition, the bus system connects all the major cities with smaller towns and is very inexpensive.  However, it can take hours to reach your destination by bus.  We also heard about petty theft in busy bus terminals and on the buses themselves, so be watchful of your belongings if you choose to go this route.

After visiting Quito, we rented a car and drove south along the Avenue of the Volcanos to reach Cotopaxi and Baños.  Both Quito and Guayaquil have a few rental car agencies, however, do not expect the wide variety of cars nor the quick customer service you are used to in the States.  Practice patience, and start practicing your Spanish at the rental counter!

Driving in Ecuador is not for the faint of heart.  If you are comfortable driving in places like Mexico or Costa Rica, you’ll be fine here.  If not, hire a driver or book day trips with a reputable tour operator like Rebecca Adventure Travel and let them worry about the cows on the road and oncoming traffic in your lane!

Travel tip: If you have limited time, instead of driving hours on sketchy mountain roads, opt for a short domestic flight between major hubs like Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, and Manta.

Try horseback riding from Tambopaxi Lodge in Cotopaxi National Park where you’ll have your own guide, a Chagra, a thick wool poncho to keep you warm, and endless views of the highlands and Cotopaxi!

Best Outdoor Activities in Ecuador

If you love getting outside in nature, whether that’s hiking, biking, or scuba diving, you will love Ecuador.  Here are the best outdoor activities in Ecuador for adventurous travelers:

1. Hike in the Andes Mountains

The stunning Andes mountain range runs north to south down the center of Ecuador and is known for its high concentration of active volcanos.  There are over 84 volcanos in Ecuador, with Cotopaxi being the most popular.  Below are a few high-altitude treks you can do in the Andes, even if you do not plan on summiting a volcano.

Keep in mind, the peaks of most of Ecuador’s volcanos will be glaciated and require technical climbing skills along with the use of crampons and ice axes.  If you do not have a lot of experience hiking at altitude, it’s best to book with a guide service or adventure tour operator.  We’ve made some recommendations below.

Rucu Pichincha

Just to the west of Quito is Pichincha at 15,696 feet.  It has two main peaks: Rucu Pichincha and Guagua Pichincha.  Take the TelefériQo from Quito to gain 3,000 feet of elevation and begin your hike at 13,000 feet.  This is a very doable, non-technical hike and you will not need a guide.  However, you should be comfortable hiking at high altitudes with some good exposure, which you’ll encounter as you scramble the last few hundred feet to the summit!  Even if you don’t make it to the summit, there are beautiful views from all the trails at the top of the teleférico, and you can also go horseback riding or meet alpacas!

Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi’s summit is at 19,347 feet, and can only be attempted with a guide.  However, you can hike to the José Rivas Refugio on Cotopaxi at 15,958 feet without a guide.  To do this, drive up to the car park at 15,000ft.  Just getting up the switchbacks to the car park is an adventure in itself!  We recommend getting a ride or having a 4-wheel drive.  Once you step out of the car, you’ll quickly feel the altitude, and each step higher only becomes more challenging as you slog through volcanic soil.  Plan on an hour to hike 1,000 feet to reach the José Rivas Refugio.  Then take in the view while sipping a coffee or enjoying a meal before descending to the car park.

The José Rivas Refugio also serves as a base for climbers attempting to summit Cotopaxi, providing bunkrooms and hot meals.  Climbers and their guides usually spend the night, rise before dawn, and make the final ascent to the summit.  If summiting Cotopaxi is something you are interested in, contact Ramiro Garrido, an official IFMGA and UIAGM-certified mountain guide in Ecuador.  We met Ramiro at Tambopaxi Lodge, and over shared meals, we learned so much about the region, the geology, and the guiding culture.  Ramiro can help you organize an expedition, provide the best dates to visit, and suggest ways in which to prepare.  Reaching the summit of Cotopaxi is never guaranteed, yet there is the potential to summit other volcanos such as Pichincha, Cayambe, or Antisana which are less demanding.

In addition to hiking Cotopaxi, there are many other day hikes and scenic lakeside trails to explore while visiting the park.  We recommend staying at Tambopaxi Lodge as it’s the only accommodation within Cotopaxi National Park and it makes a great home base for acclimatizing, wildlife viewing, and horseback riding.

Chimborazo

Chimborazo is the tallest volcano in Ecuador at 20,548 feet and it’s located at the southern end of the Avenue of the Volcanos.  Stay at the Chimborazo Lodge to explore the nearby hiking trails and wildlife.

Quilotoa Crater

The Quilotoa Loop is a high-altitude trek passing through remote Andean villages and ending at the breathtaking crater lake of Quilotoa.  Stay nearby at the Hacienda La Alegria, a family horse farm near the Quilotoa Crater.

Hiking to the Jose Rivas Refugio on Cotopaxi is no small feat as you’ll gain 1,000 feet of elevation and top out at almost 16,000ft!

2. Explore the Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Basin is among the most biodiverse regions on Earth and exploring here should be near the top of your best outdoor activities in Ecuador itinerary.  If you love spotting wildlife, from howler monkeys and jaguars to pink river dolphins, you will enjoy exploring the Amazon rainforest.

The villages of Baños de Agua Santa and Tena are known as the “Gateways to the Amazon”.  In both towns, you will find dozens of adventure tour operators like GeoTours who can organize day trips to go mountain biking, hiking, white-water rafting, or canyoneering!   For those who want to go deeper into the Amazon, visit Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve and Yasuni National Park.

Our favorite place to stay was just outside of Baños at Hosteria Finca Chamanapamba.  This sprawling treehouse, built into the rainforest by a German family, is within walking distance to the Ruta de Las 7 Cascadas!  You’ll fall asleep to the cacophony of jungle sounds and water flowing over the rocks just a few hundred feet away!

3. Hike to the Waterfalls Along La Ruta de Cascada

The area around Baños is also home to La Ruta de Las Cascadas, the Waterfall Route.  Heading east from Baños towards Puyo, you’ll have about ten stops along La Ruta de Las Cascadas, each to visit a new waterfall.  You can get there by car, by bike, or by bus to explore the waterfalls.  Once you reach a stop, each waterfall will require lots of hiking, often down dozens of sketchy stairs built with MacGyver-like precision into the side of steep moss-covered cliffs.  Our kind of type 2 fun!

In Baños you can rent mountain bikes, book with an adventure tour operator, or take your rental car as we did.  Our favorite waterfall hike was to the Pailon Del Diablo or the Devil’s Cauldron, which you can check out here!

Instead of hiking to all the waterfalls in one day, enjoy your adventures over a couple of days and combine them with other activities like Tibetan bridge crossings, swinging at the Casa de Arbol, soaking in thermal hot springs, flying over the canyons in cable cars, or zip-lining.  Exploring La Ruta de Las Cascadas was one of the best outdoor activities in Ecuador, and should be at the top of your adventure travel itinerary!

Make sure to drive up to what feels like the top of the world and check out the swings at Casa de Arbol!

4. Soak in Ecuador’s Hot Springs

In this region of volcanic activity, it’s no surprise that Baños is home to several thermal pools and hot springs.  If you didn’t know, Baños de Agua Santa means ‘Baths of Holy Water,’ and the active Tungurahua volcano provides mineral-rich hot springs that can be easily accessed at two locations open to the public:

• Termas de La Virgen– located at the foot of la Virgen waterfall in the town of Baños

In addition to these public locations, which charge a nominal fee and require you to wear a bathing cap, many hotels have pools heated by the thermal waters flowing through Baños from Tungurahua.  Whichever you choose, a soak in the hot springs after a day of adventure feels extra special!

5. Go Birdwatching in the Mindo Cloud Forest

Exploring outdoor activities in Ecuador often means getting off the beaten path to more remote areas.  Travel two hours from Quito to reach Mindo, a small village in the cloud forest known for its rich biodiversity.  Here you can hike or ride cable cars high above the forest floor and spot dozens of different species of toucans, butterflies, and hummingbirds.  You can also go zip-lining, hike to waterfalls, and visit the Yumbo Chocolate Factory!

Book a day trip from Quito to Mindo, or plan to stay overnight to fully immerse yourself in the cloud forest experience.  If you want to stay, check out Hacienda San Vicente or “The Yellow House” which has hiking trails right from the property into the Mindo Cloud Forest.

6. Visit the Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos are a world-renowned destination for wildlife enthusiasts and marine adventurers.  You can fill your days with outdoor activities like snorkeling with sea lions, scuba diving with hammerhead sharks, and meeting giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies.  This protected island chain lies 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, so a flight from the mainland is necessary.

There is a daily limit of visitors to the Galápagos Islands to maintain its rare and pristine environment.  Therefore, you must book in advance.  Once you arrive at the Galápagos, landing at the tiny airstrip in Baltra, you’ll often board a small 20-person cruise to reach the islands of Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, and others in the archipelago.

Travel tip: If traveling to the Galápagos doesn’t work with your itinerary, there are other places where you can snorkel or spot blue-footed boobies- keep reading to find out!

The opportunity to spot wildlife in Ecuador is incredible once you get off the beaten path. In the highlands along the Avenue of the Volcanos, look for Andean foxes!

7. Visit a Farm to See Llamas and Alpacas, and Go Horseback Riding

As you travel outside of the major cities in Ecuador’s Andes region, you will quickly enter rolling farmland and major agricultural areas.  With its rich volcanic soil and diverse climate, Ecuador is a top producer of fruits and vegetables indigenous to the Andes.  In addition, you’ll find most farms raising horses and cows, along with llamas and alpacas.  Spotting a herd of llamas or alpacas in the Andean highlands is quite common as these animals are native to the region and are used by the indigenous communities of Ecuador.  Even more modernized farms may raise alpacas and llamas for their prized wool or as pack animals to transport goods.

Alpacas in particular have risen in popularity and are quite the tourist attraction with their big expressive eyes, fluffy coats, and gentle demeanor.  To guarantee a meet-and-greet with a herd of alpacas your best bet is to book a farm stay.  Look for a ‘finca or hacienda‘.  Hacienda Zuleta is a gorgeous working farm near Quito and Otavalo.  In addition, El Cajas National Park outside of Cuenca or the Reserva de Produccion Faunistica Chimborazo (Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve) are great places to spot alpacas, llamas, and the elusive vicuñas and Andean foxes.  Finally, there’s a herd of llamas in Quito roaming in Parque Metropolitano Guanguiltagua!

8. Surf, Scuba Dive, and Go Whale Watching on Ecuador’s Pacific Coast

Outdoor activities in Ecuador can also extend into the ocean and underwater.  For surfers, there are several beach towns including Montañita, known for its lively atmosphere, and Ayampe a much quieter spot on the northern beaches.  Here you can rent surfboards and take a lesson, or lie back, relax, and sip a margarita under a palapa!  In addition, Los Frailes Beach, within Machalilla National Park, is another serene spot where you can snorkel right off the shore!

If you love marine life, stop in Puerto López and book a guided day trip to Isla de la Plata.  Known as the poor man’s Galapagos, Isla de la Plata is a protected area located within Machalilla National Park, and is about two hours by boat from Puerto López.  Once on Isla de la Plata, you can snorkel with green sea turtles and manta rays, or hike to see blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, giant frigates, and albatross.  Visiting Isla de la Plata was the highlight of our time on the coast and we recommend booking with Machalilla Tours for snorkeling or scuba diving.

Travel tip: Visit between June through September to witness humpback whales making their annual migration from Antarctica to the nutrient-rich waters off Ecuador’s coastline.

Outdoor Activities in Ecuador: Health Advisories and Safety

While enjoying outdoor activities in Ecuador, it’s essential to prioritize health and safety.  If you’ve already begun your Ecuador travel searches, you’ll notice a lot of “Is it safe to travel to Ecuador?” blogs and forums.  It’s a smart question to ask, as there has been a recent uptick in crime.  Here is the answer to that ‘Is Ecuador safe’ question along with a few other questions to consider before you depart:

Is It Safe to Travel to Ecuador?

Ecuador has experienced a rise in crime, primarily due to escalating drug-related violence and gang activity.  While not a major producer of illegal drugs, Ecuador is sandwiched between Peru to the south and Colombia to the north, both major cocaine-producing regions.  Unfortunately, this contributes to the country’s role as a transit area for narcotics bound for international markets.  Therefore, port cities like Guayaquil and Esmeraldas have seen significant crime and drug-related violence.  In response, the Ecuadorian government has often implemented measures such as a nationwide state of emergency, nighttime curfews, and military checkpoints to protect its citizens.

While visiting Ecuador remains possible for international travelers, safety precautions are essential.  Avoid high-risk areas in Guayaquil and Esmeraldas, do not travel alone or late at night, and share your travel details with the U.S. Department of State through their STEP Program to receive updates and advisories.  When exploring, especially in busy cities or even remote regions, stick to organized tours with good reviews, and use trusted transportation.  Pickpocketing and petty theft can occur in crowded areas and on public transport.

This is not the place to wear expensive clothes or jewelry. In addition, taking out your cell phone to take photos, navigate walking directions, or scroll through social media in busy city centers will only draw attention.  Be smart and keep your valuables at home or in your hotel safe.

If it’s your first time traveling in Latin America, I recommend booking your outdoor activities in Ecuador through a tour operator like Rebecca Adventure Travel.  They have years of experience and stellar reviews.  We did not end up taking their tours, but their customer service was excellent, they answered every question we had, gave us sample itineraries, and went above and beyond!

How Can I Avoid Altitude Sickness?

Due to varying altitudes, especially in the Andes, be mindful of altitude sickness.  It may start as a headache, dizziness, sleeplessness, or nausea.  If you’ve never spent much time at high altitudes, acclimatize gradually and stay hydrated.  Give yourself a day or two to adjust to the altitude, and remember, Quito is at 9,000 feet.  Just walking up a flight of stairs to your room will feel like a big effort!

Do I Need Vaccinations for Ecuador?

If you only plan to visit the coast and stay in major cities like Guayaquil, Quito, and Cuenca, or visit the Galapagos Islands, you will not need vaccinations.  However, vaccinations may be required if you will be visiting the Amazon.  These may include yellow fever, malaria, and dengue fever, which are transmitted through mosquitoes.  Check to see which ones you might need and if your healthcare provider offers this.

Yellow fever vaccine was recommended for our trip, and we quickly learned that not many pharmacies carry it.  Schedule an appointment a few weeks before your trip to give the vaccine time to take effect.  To help reduce mosquito bites while traveling, pack a good insect repellent and long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Can You Drink the Water in Ecuador?

Drink bottled or purified water while traveling in Ecuador.  Tap water is not safe for drinking.  Almost all reputable hotels, cafes, and restaurants serve bottled water or use purified water for making drinks and ice.  Bottled water is very inexpensive, less than $1.00 for a large bottle, so always carry one with you.

What is Ecuador’s currency or exchange rate?

Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar, so as an American traveler, you will not need to change money upon arrival.  This surprises and delights most travelers!   There are ATMs in most city centers and the cost of goods is much less than you will find in the U.S.  However, whether it’s accommodations, meals, or transportation, most Ecuadorians prefer cash.  Carry small bills and get change.  You’ll be using a lot of $1 coins and fifty-cent pieces, and no one ever has change for a twenty!

Outdoor Activities in Ecuador: Final Thoughts on the Local Culture and Cuisine

The best outdoor activities in Ecuador have something for everyone.  While exploring, remember to try all the local cuisine.  After a cold, blustery hike to the Jose Rivas Refugio at Cotopaxi, our first few bites of Locro de Papa were outstanding!  We went on to eat this creamy potato soup, garnished with cheese, avocado, and a side of crusty bread daily at Tambopaxi Lodge.  If you’re in the coastal towns of Montanita or Puerto Lopez, you can’t go wrong with ceviche and a cerveza after a surf or whale-watching tour.  The fish is often caught fresh that day!

In addition, the floral and fruity aroma of every cup of Ecuadorian coffee was incredible and gave us that extra boost before a morning hike.  And the chocolate!!  Most of the cacao is grown near the coast at small organic farms or cacao plantations that you can visit.  If you’ll be in Quito, make an appointment to visit Yumbos Chocolate Shop for a tasting or visit their factory in Mindo.

This was why we traveled over 5,000 miles to Wrexham to witness the magic firsthand!  The excitement surrounding Wrexham AFC and the town of Wrexham has reached new heights and we think the team has a great chance to go all the way to the Premier League!  It won’t happen overnight, but this new momentum will keep the team and the town going strong.

Securing Wrexham tickets is easier than you might think.  However, getting to the match, well, that is another story.  In this blog, we’ll explore how you can make your dream of visiting Wrexham and getting tickets to see the Red Dragons play in person a reality!

 

Where is Wrexham?

 

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Wales countryside lies the town of Wrexham.  Although it’s very close to the border with England, and about 45-60 minutes south of both Liverpool and Manchester, Wrexham is in Wales and not in England.

To make this more confusing, Wrexham and the country of Wales are part of the UK (the United Kingdom), and a part of Great Britain, but again, a separate country from England.  The Welsh people have their own language, their own government, and a unique cultural identity not found in other parts of the UK.  Rob and Ryan give us a crash course on this in “Welcome to Wrexham.”  It’s like a comedic PSA, but seriously, don’t forget it when you hit the town!

 

 

Wrexham History

 

Wrexham was once a highly industrialized town, characterized by coal mines, steel works, and other labor-intensive industries that dominated its landscape.  However, the last coal mine closed in 1914, and the town is experiencing a rebirth thanks in part to “Welcome to Wrexham”.

Wrexham is not only known for its rich history, but also for its stunning landscapes, and passionate football culture.  From imposing stone castles that served as medieval strongholds to breathtaking national parks to the friendliest locals we’ve met in the UK, both Wales and the Welsh people provide even more reason to make the trip across the pond!

 

The home of Wrexham AFC football: STōK Cae Ras aka ‘The Racecourse’

 

Experiencing the electric atmosphere of Wrexham on match day and stepping into the iconic Racecourse grounds, the STōK Cae Ras, will make your eyes water.  Cae Ras is Welsh for ‘race field’ and STōK is for STōK Cold Brew Coffee, the current sponsor of the stadium.

As one of the oldest football clubs in Wales and the oldest international football stadium still in use, the Racecourse boasts a passionate fan base and a storied legacy that dates back to 1864!  In addition, conveniently located at Racecourse, right outside the gates, is one of the best pubs in Wrexham, The Turf.

Getting Wrexham Tickets

 

While scoring Wrexham tickets to see a match at the STōK Cae Ras may seem challenging and expensive, as an American fan it was a straightforward process.  Thanks to the club’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, tickets were readily available for both home and away matches!  If you’ve ever tried to buy tickets for a Premier League or UEFA Champions League match, purchasing Wrexham tickets is very different.

The first step to getting Wrexham tickets is to visit the official Wrexham AFC website, where you’ll find detailed information on match schedules, tickets, membership, and more.  We recommend becoming a Wrexham AFC Member first, as opposed to searching for single match day tickets.

DOn’t Buy Wrexham AFC Tickets from a Third-Party Seller

 

Football match tickets for Premier League matches, the UEFA Champions League, the Europa League, and all the way down to the lower EFL levels should never be purchased through a site like StubHub or another third-party vendor. 

First, these tickets are often sold at inflated prices, making them more expensive than face value.  Additionally, there’s a risk of purchasing fake or invalid tickets, resulting in disappointment and potentially missing out on the match entirely.  Finally, buying from unauthorized sellers undermines the integrity of the club’s ticketing system and can contribute to issues like ticket scalping.

Getting to Wrexham for Match Day

 

Once you’ve secured tickets, the next step is determining how you will get to Wrexham on match day.  For international travelers, the closest international airports include Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport.  From either Manchester or Liverpool, there are convenient connections to Wrexham via train or taxi and this takes just under an hour.

If you are only in town for a short period, and sticking around Wrexham, Liverpool, or Manchester, there is really no need to rent a car.  In addition, driving on the other side of the road is no joke, and you’ll often have a manual transmission!  More on this in a bit.

 

We do not recommend flying into London Heathrow unless you:

 

1. Book a fast train on Avanti West Coast (London Euston Station to Liverpool Lime Street (travel time: 3-4 hours)
2. Have plenty of time before the kickoff
3. Are EXTREMELY comfortable driving on the other side of the road!

 

Our Journey to Wrexham

 

As an example of what not to do, our flights were into London, we traveled over the Easter holiday break, there was a train strike, and we had a limited amount of time to get to Wrexham for the afternoon match.

In addition, while on a map Wrexham does look close to London mileage-wise, it’s less than 200 miles away, it took over five hours for us to get there by car!!  That doesn’t even include the time it took to get out of London to pick up our car at Heathrow Airport.  Not only were we running late, we almost missed the entire match!

 

If you do plan to drive, make sure you are:

• Confident driving a car with manual transmission, automatics are expensive and often unavailable
• Comfortable driving with the steering wheel and gear shift on the opposite side of the car
• Experienced with driving on the other side of the road, and on small roads with lots of roundabouts

Wrexham Match Day Experience

 

Attending a Wrexham AFC match is more than just watching a game; it’s an immersive experience that celebrates the spirit of community and camaraderie.  From the pre-match rituals at nearby pubs to the jubilant cheers of the Red Dragons faithful inside the stadium, every moment is infused with an undeniable energy that captivates fans of all ages.

Whether you’re a seasoned football aficionado or a first-time spectator, the warm hospitality and infectious enthusiasm will make you feel right at home.

If you get there early enough, you might catch some of Wrexham’s star players as they enter the Racecourse.  If you forgot your team colors, or still don’t have a Wrexham scarf, stop by the Club Shop onsite before the match. 

Speaking of what to bring with you to the Racecourse, here are a few must-haves:

• Dress in layers.  It was the end of March yet I had on thermals under my jeans! 
• Bring a rain jacket.  It was sunny when the match began, and pouring sideways by halftime.
• Small purses or clear plastic bags only (same as other stadium rules)

 

If you’ve never been to a football (aka soccer) match, teams play two forty-five-minute halves with a short halftime in between.  15-20 minutes max.  There are no TV timeouts, no water breaks, and extra time gets added onto each half for things like injuries and other occurrences that stop the match play.

Plan to stay in your seat for the full forty-five minute half, plus any extra time, and then make a quick run out to grab a pint, a snack, or use the toilet at halftime.  Unlike in the U.S., fans cannot bring alcohol back to their seats.  So drink up quick!

Then it’s back inside to stand, cheer (it’s ‘Up the Reds’ instead of ‘Let’s Go Reds’), sing (make sure you learn a few songs!), and make friends with those seated around you.  Ask them where they’re from, how long they’ve been a supporter, and if they are a local, now is your chance to get insider tips on Wrexham and the surrounding area!

 

The Turf

 

One of our favorite parts of visiting Wrexham was spending time at The Turf meeting other fans and local supporters after the match.  We sang, we danced, we met the bar owner Wayne, and together we celebrated a big win for the Red Dragons!

We also can’t thank locals like Cav enough for befriending us and giving us lots of tips on things to do in the area.  We happened to be staying in Liverpool for three nights after the match, and he recommended Cooper’s pub (absolutely fantastic!) along with a side trip to Crosby Beach to see the wild ‘Another Place’ art installation by Antony Gormley!

Where to Stay in Wrexham

 

Once you arrive in Wrexham, exploring the town and the area surrounding the Racecourse is a breeze.  The town center is easily navigable on foot, allowing you to stroll along its charming streets lined with historic buildings, quaint shops and cafes.

Keep in mind, Wrexham is a small town with a population of 45,000 people and offers fewer choices for places to stay compared to larger cities in the UK.  However, you will find Airbnbs, cozy bed and breakfasts, and a handful of modern hotels.  Hotels including the Wynnstay Arms Hotel and the Ramada Plaza by Wyndham offer convenient access to the town center and decent amenities for a comfortable stay.

If you plan to stay in Manchester or Liverpool and only come to Wrexham for match day, both cities have dozens of hotel options that will suit every traveler’s budget.  There’s also an abundance of shops, restaurants and pubs in both Manchester and Liverpool.  In addition, both cities have several train lines and more scheduled train services than Wrexham.

Wherever you decide to stay, remember to leave plenty of time to arrive at the match an hour or two before kickoff to enjoy the festive atmosphere.  And of course, leave time after the match to hang at The Turf!

 

 

Exploring Wales Beyond Wrexham

 

While Wrexham serves as an excellent home base, it also serves as a gateway to exploring the diverse landscapes and cultural treasures of Wales.  From towering granite peaks to breathtaking seashores to farms filled with sheep, there’s no shortage of sights to discover during your visit.

 

Here are a few stops to consider on your trip through the Welsh countryside:

 

• UNESCO World Heritage Site: Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal, a marvel of engineering that spans the Dee Valley
• Majestic castles such as Chirk Castle, Caernarfon Castle, Penrhyn Castle

Where is Sayulita, Mexico?

Situated amidst the lush tropical jungles of mainland Mexico and overlooking the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean, Sayulita boasts a picturesque setting that is both breathtaking and tranquil.  And it’s easy to get to!  If you’re traveling to Sayulita, you will most likely fly into Puerto Vallarta (PVR) which is approximately 40 minutes to the south.  Puerto Vallarta is a large Mexican city with about 220,000 people, and there are flights daily on airlines like Aero Mexico, Volaris, and even Alaska Airlines!

While Puerto Vallarta is nowhere near as big as Mexico City, it’s been quite a popular destination for travelers to escape the cold winters for decades.  Over 35,000 Americans and Canadians have retired here!  Even the old 80’s TV show, The Love Boat, used to sail to Puerto Vallarta from Los Angeles all the time, but now I’m dating myself…

Getting to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta

Getting to Sayulita once you arrive in Puerto Vallarta is relatively easy, with several transportation options available depending on your preferences and budget.  Once you land, you can opt for a private taxi, shuttle service, bus, or rental car to reach your accommodations.  We recommend scheduling a shuttle or a private van transport in advance, especially if you have a few friends in tow!

The cost for a private shuttle or van will be around $90-$120 US dollars.  However, keep in mind you will probably need to convert your US dollars to pesos before leaving the airport.  Or have your driver stop at an ATM on the way out of Puerto Vallarta!

We do not recommend renting a car for traveling to Sayulita as the town is very walkable.  In addition, taxis or day trips to get to other nearby towns or back to Puerto Vallarta for your flight home are easy to book!

When to Visit Sayulita

The best time of year to visit Sayulita is during the dry season, which typically spans from November to April.  During this time, you can expect sunny skies, warm temperatures, and minimal rainfall.  This creates ideal conditions for outdoor activities and beachside relaxation.

However, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere and don’t mind the occasional afternoon shower, visiting during the shoulder seasons of May to June or September to October can also offer rewarding experiences with fewer crowds!

Sayultia is also one of Mexico’s pueblos mágicos, which are villages that have kept their mystical character along with their original architecture, culture, folklore, and history intact.  As you stroll along the quaint streets lined with colorful flags, you will meet lots of local vendors who still make all of their crafts by hand.  The Sayulita street dogs are by far the cutest creations, modeled after all the little dogs you will find wandering the alleyways around town.  If you don’t have room in your suitcase to take one home, pick one up stateside through Ugly Cute Dogs.  In addition, a portion of your purchase of an Ugly Cute Dog goes to support a local rescue organization!

For those that want more adventure, check out Chica Locca Tours for lots of all-inclusive day trip options by boat including visiting the Yelapa Waterfall, the Marietas Islands, whale watching, stand-up paddle boarding, and snorkeling!  Keep in mind that most tours leaving from Sayulita will include van transport to/from Nuevo Vallarta, about 40 minutes south.  This is where you will board one of Chica Locca’s mega-yachts!

Best Places to Eat in Sayulita

What surprised us most when traveling to Sayulita was the food.  Sayulita is a culinary paradise with an abundance of eateries serving up delicious Mexican cuisine and international fare to satisfy every palate!  Start your day with a hearty breakfast at ChocoBanana, known for its chocolate-covered bananas, mouthwatering pancakes, and fresh fruit smoothies.

For lunch or dinner, head to Sayulita’s vibrant town center, where you’ll find a plethora of casual eateries serving up authentic tacos, ceviche, and seafood dishes.  Don Pedro’s offers a more upscale dining experience with a menu featuring fresh seafood and Mexican classics with an ocean view.  Our favorite meal was at the small L’Ulivo Ristorante!  Here you’ll be treated to homemade pasta dishes with local seafood and incredible service!

Practicing Yoga in Sayulita

Walk a block in Sayulita’s colorful downtown area and you’re likely to pass several yoga studios along the way.  Sayulita’s bohemian chic vibe lends itself easily to the practice of yoga, and here you’ll find many different options to get your namaste on!  In addition, many hotels and AirBnbs will offer free yoga mats plus a space to practice in.  Our rooftop patio was the perfect retreat for a quiet yoga session as the sun rose each morning!

Surfing Sayulita’s Gentle Waves

Sayulita’s warm waters, about 80 degrees, and consistent 2-3 feet waves make it an ideal destination for longboard surfing enthusiasts.  Whether you’re a complete beginner or a more advanced longboarder, there are plenty of options for both surf lessons and board rentals so leave your surfboard at home!

Several surf schools operate along Sayulita’s main beach, offering group and private lessons taught by experienced instructors.  Sayulita Surf School and Lunazul Surf School are both perfect for beginners!  Both shops offer great rental prices, about $5 US dollars per hour, and a nice variety of longboards to choose from.  In addition, we highly recommend both if you’re searching for a friendly atmosphere, lockers to leave your valuables while you surf, and a chance to shower off afterward!

If you prefer a more personalized experience, consider booking a surf retreat or camp, where you can enjoy guided surf sessions, yoga classes, and accommodations all in one package.  Sayulita’s laid-back vibe and warm hospitality make it the perfect destination to learn to surf and connect with fellow surfers from around the world.

Searching for things to do in San Diego to enjoy the perfect weather?  Well, San Diego is America’s Finest City and the best destination for a family vacation or a romantic weekend by the beach!  There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy our sunshine or stay cool when the temperatures creep up!

In addition, with the cost of entrance fees at more popular destinations like the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, Sea World, and Legoland being quite expensive, you might be searching for free or cheap things to do in San Diego to keep the kids cool and occupied.

Well look no further, here are our Top 10 Things to Do in San Diego outdoors so you can break out the swimsuits and bring on the smiles!

Top 10 Things to Do in San Diego

1. Visit Balboa Park’s Museums And Trails

Need to get some shade and cool off?  Balboa Park is a great place to spend an afternoon exploring over 15 different museums, botanical gardens, and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. It’s also home to the San Diego Zoo!

Are you more interested in trail running and mountain biking?  Well then check out the miles of gentle rollers with wide-open trails or single track with rock gardens and steep switchbacks. You’ll cruise past oak groves, eucalyptus trees, dry stream beds, and lots of cactus gardens.  Balboa Park is also dog-friendly, so enjoy walking, running, or biking with your favorite pup, on a leash of course!

Parking is free and the best spots that are the least congested are near Morley Field or the Golden Hill Trails Gateway.  If you enter the park on Laurel, drive past the Prado and park in the large lot behind the Organ Pavilion.  Balboa Park is also home to the Morley Field Sports Complex and Dog Park and the Balboa Park Golf Course.  Here you will find a dog park, tennis, the San Diego Velodrome, Bud Kearns Pool, and a driving range!

2. Pedal Or Stroll Across Coronado

Do you prefer to get around town by bicycle?  Well, it’s one of our favorite things to do in San Diego!  Pedaling the Bayshore Bikeway and along the Silver Stand lets you see downtown San Diego and the sleepy beach town of Coronado.  Start near Waterfront Park in Little Italy and head south on the Pacific Coast Highway to pick up the Bayshore Bikeway.  The trip is a flat 24 miles on a mix of bike paths and surface streets that finishes up at the Coronado Ferry Landing.  Ferries depart every 20-30 minutes for a 15-minute ride back to either the Convention Center or Broadway Pier.

Not too comfortable riding with traffic on surface streets?  Take the ferry across to Coronado first.  You can walk around by the harbor shops and restaurants, or catch a taxi to the Hotel Del Coronado.  Cruise the beach or stay on the bike path all the way down the Silver Strand.

Need a bike or a scooter?  Check out the dockless bikes and scooters from Bird, Lime Bike, and Ofo.  Just make sure not to abandon them in Coronado as it’s prohibited!

Here are a few more options in San Diego where you can scoop a bike, helmet, or bike lock.  And don’t forget lights if you plan to pedal until sunset:

3. Be A Kid Again At Waterfront Park and Explore the USS Midway and Maritime Museum

Do you have childhood memories of running through sprinklers?  If so then you’ll love Waterfront Park.  Set amongst downtown San Diego’s landmark buildings, you can play in the fountains, the kid’s zone, or come down for a picnic on the lawn to catch the sunset.  Just perfect for summertime in San Diego.

In addition, Waterfront Park is within walking distance of the USS Midway Museum and the Maritime Museum.

La Jolla Shores is a great spot to surf, snorkel, kayak or just relax!

4. Kayaking, Surfing, And Snorkeling At La Jolla Shores

We love spending days along San Diego’s 70 miles of coastline.  However, sometimes we want a little something more than sunbathing.  If this sounds like you, then La Jolla Shores is the place to be for some of the best snorkeling and kayaking in Southern California.  In addition, you can also try stand-up paddleboarding and surfing!

Here are a few of the best places to rent beach and surf gear:

• La Jolla Kayak
• Surf Diva
• Everyday California

While out on the water, be prepared to see California sea lions, brown pelicans, bat rays, bright orange Garibaldi, and harbor seals.  The Leopard sharks, which get their name from the spots on their skin, congregate in the calm, shallow waters on the south end of Kellogg Park.  Don’t worry, they feed on invertebrates in the sand and are harmless to swimmers and surfers.

For the easiest swimming and best visibility to snorkel, go at low tide and little to no wind.  Check the surf conditions and the tide before you go.

La Jolla Shores is also a great place for young ones as the waves are smaller than other spots in San Diego. In addition, it’s a fantastic place to learn to surf along with another favorite spot of ours to the south, Tourmaline Surfing Park!  All of the La Jolla Shores rental companies above can help you with everything you’ll need: wetsuits, surfboards, kayaks, and snorkel gear.  In addition, you can also book guided tours and surf lessons!   We love Surf Diva and the instructors are always top-notch.

You can park near the Marine Room Restaurant and walk down their beach access path.  Or parking is free at Kellogg Park, and it’s just a short walk down the beach!

5. Cruise The Pacific Coast Highway in North County

Are you staying in North County or want to camp along the coast?  Well, first read our blog about camping at San Elijo State Beach!  Then enjoy another one of our top things to do in San Diego and cruise the Pacific Coast Highway!  The PCH, the 101, whatever you want to call it, it’s the best place in San Diego to pedal, jog, surf, and soak in the ocean views!

Start in at Torrey Pines or in Solana Beach and pedal north through Encinitas, Leucadia, and Carlsbad, and finish up at Oceanside Harbor Village.  You can turn around whenever you’re ready, or ride all the way up and back.  It’s 27 miles one way from Torrey Pines to Oceanside Harbor.

Even driving this stretch of San Diego’s coastline is incredible.  Just make sure to pack the beach essentials- sunblock, hat, water, bathing suit, and a towel. This way you can swim at Fletcher’s Cove, Moonlight Beach, or Swamis!

Are you interested in surfing in North County?  Well, Cardiff Reef, Swamis, and around Fletcher Cove all have good surf breaks!  Cardiff Reef is within walking distance of the Patagonia Cardiff shop, just in case you need to stock up on surf gear!

6. Hiking and Trail Running At Torrey Pines

One of our favorite things to do in San Diego is to run through Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.  The best part?  You can enjoy a swim after your run or hike!  Trails at Torrey Pines are a few miles or less and the difficulty is from easy to moderate.  We like hiking or jogging up to the Nature Center first, then making our way back down to the beach via the Razor Point Trail or the Beach Trail.

If you park in the North Beach Parking lot, off Carmel Valley Road, you can extend your hike to include the marshland trails around Los Penasquitos Lagoon.

Searching for more trails, especially for mountain biking?  Read until the end to see our recommendations that are less than an hour’s drive from downtown!

You can jog along Torrey Pines State Beach from Del Mar to La Jolla.  There’s also lots of hiking trails to explore within Torrey Pines State Reserve.

7. Visit Sunset Cliffs and Cabrillo National Monument

Sunset Cliffs is located south of Ocean Beach in the Point Loma area and is home to a gorgeous stretch of coastline!  Over 2 miles of ocean views where you can hike, bike, run, or surf.  Cliff jumping is also a thing when the tide is right.  It’s a bucket list thing to do in San Diego!

However, just sitting on the railing, listening to the waves, and watching the surfers might be more than enough for you.  However, if you want to get in the water and surf, the Sunset Cliffs area does have a few beach entrances.   Most are not suited for little ones, so it’s better to take them nearby to Ocean Beach.

Cabrillo National Monument is located at the end of Point Loma, and it’s where Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first landed when he explored this area in 1542.  You can use your National Parks Pass to enter, or pay the day rate and explore the tidepools.  In addition, the views from the Point Loma Lighthouse are good enough for whale watching from December through March!

There’s a large Visitor’s Center with bathrooms, and one of our favorite things to do is to pedal to Cabrillo on a road bike or e-bike from Ocean Beach.  Why?  The climb through the naval base and then the sweeping descent down to Cabrillo’s coastal trails and tidepools are worth every drop of sweat!

8. Visit Mission Beach And Pacific Beach

Pedaling, running, or rollerblading along Ocean Front Walk from South Mission Beach to Pacific Beach is another one of our favorite things to do in San Diego.  Especially when we have visitors!  This beautiful stretch of beach, home to the most summer rentals in San Diego, goes all the way from South Mission Beach through Pacific Beach to Bird Rock in La Jolla.

Our favorite surf spot in the area is Tourmaline at the north end of Pacific Beach.  It’s perfect for sunbathing, learning to surf, SUP.  In addition, Tourmaline has its own free parking lot, showers, bathrooms, and is great for beginners to advanced longboarders.  If you’re seeking more shortboard action, try closer to the pier in PB.

In addition, beachfront fun is back at Belmont Park in Mission Beach!  Originally built in the 1950s, Belmont Park consisted of the Plunge pool and the Giant Dipper roller coaster, which still stands today.  The amusement park is filled with rides, arcade games, laser tag, mini-golf, and rock climbing.  Adjacent to the park are tons of shops, bars, and restaurants like Draft and Cannonball where you can grab a beer, a burger, and catch the sunset.

Did you forget flip-flops or feel like a new bikini?   Well then walk one block east of the beach, to Mission Boulevard, where you will find plenty of bars, restaurants, bike, and surf shops.  You’ll also find one of our favorites, Single Fin Surf Grill with the best bartenders at the beach serving up tasty breakfast burritos, craft beers, and cocktails.  As you make your way north you’ll find a few more popular San Diego summertime bars, like Lahaina’s Beach House and World Famous.

Catching the sunset at Sunset Cliffs, nestled on the coastline between Ocean Beach and Point Loma, is one of the best ways to enjoy San Diego’s ocean views!

9. Go to Soccer Match at Snapdragon Stadium

One of our favorite things to do in San Diego is to go to a soccer match!  We are supporters of the NWSL women’s pro soccer team, the San Diego Wave FC, and Snapdragon Stadium is also home to the newest MLS team the San Diego FC!  Both teams play at Snapdragon between March through October.

If you’ve never been to a soccer (or football match for those of you reading that live outside of the U.S. and Canada), they are filled with chanting, singing, and lots of families wearing their home team scarves.  You will see LOTS of kids wearing their team soccer jerseys or the jersey of their favorite player!  In addition, going to a soccer match is nothing like going to an NFL match with drunken, rowdy fans.  Tickets are very reasonable.  Cheap seats start at around $26 each.  Buy online through San Diego Wave FC, San Diego FC, or Ticketmaster.  We have been long-time Wave FC supporters and season ticket holders and we try not to miss a match!

Pro tip: Park at McGregor’s down the street, have a pint or bite to eat before the match, and then pedal or walk over to the match!  We bring our bikes to make it easy to get back and forth, and of course save on stadium parking, which can be almost $40 a match!  In addition, the food and beverages at Snapdragon are not cheap, so stopping at McGregor’s before and after ensures you are well-fed and hydrated!  With kids in tow, Snapdragon Stadium parking might be your best bet, but then it’s easier to tailgate and enjoy the Fan Fest before the match!

10. Swim Laps in the Sunshine

While we’ve mentioned lots of beaches where you can get in a swim, if you are like us, you might be searching for a place to get in a workout without having to worry about the waves or marine life.  Here are our favorite places to swim laps in San Diego:

• Bud Kearns Pool- in Balboa Park
• The Plunge Pool- in Belmont Park, Mission Beach
• Open water swimming in Mission Bay (aim for the roped-off areas or where there are fewer boats), or at La Jolla Cove. If you’re new or still a beginner to open water swimming, go with a buddy!  Check out La Jolla Swim Club or the San Diego Triathlon Club!

Catch the sunrise at Kellogg Park near Scripps Institution of Oceanography at La Jolla Shores Beach where you will often find perfect conditions for snorkeling, kayaking and surfing!

Things to Do Near San Diego, Within an Hour’s Drive

If you’re searching for more adventure within an hour’s drive of downtown San Diego and potential camping, here are our favorites!

La Jolla Indian Campground + Luiseño Bike Park

Just northeast of the city, nestled in the shadows of Palomar Mountain lies La Jolla Indian Campground.  The nice bonus here is that in addition to camping by the river, the Luiseño Bike Park is located right in the campground.  The bike park offers daily shuttle service to the top at almost 6,000ft, the views are incredible, and there are miles of fun flowy downhill trails.

You can even rent tubes to flow down the campground’s river and there’s zip-lining!

Mount Laguna + Lake Cuyamaca

Other areas we love for outdoor adventures in San Diego’s local mountains include Mount Laguna and Lake Cuyamaca.  Both are about an hour’s drive east on the 8.  You’ll climb up out of the warm desert scrubland and into the cool breezes of the pine forest at 6,000ft.  There are several campgrounds including Laguna Campground, and dozens of trails for riding, hiking, or just relaxing with a view across Laguna Meadows!

If you love mountain biking, the descent down Noble Canyon is epic!

I didn’t think I would ever get caught in an avalanche.  I bet the kid sitting next to me at the top of the 9990 Lift, just past the backcountry access gate outside of Park City Resort didn’t think so either.

He begins to crank down the straps on his snowboard.  He’s ready to drop down hundreds of feet into fresh powder.  Just before leaving the ridgeline, he turns to his buddy and says, “Hey, don’t let me die today bro.”

The good news- he made it down safely.  We all did.  The bad news:

• In 90% of avalanches, the victim or someone in the victim’s party triggers the avalanche.
• Most avalanche fatalities are highly skilled skiers or snowboarders between the ages of 18-40.
• Avalanches can occur on 30-45° slopes, so most ‘blues’ and all ‘black diamond’ slopes in a resort.
• Slopes that have already been skied can still avalanche.
• Avalanche victims buried under the snow and rescued within 15 minutes have 92% survival rate. This drops to 34% after 19-35 minutes under the snow.

Adventuring outside of the ski resort, even just beyond the gates or roped-off areas can be dangerous. Especially on days after a big snowstorm.

Why Avalanche Education is Needed for All

Avalanche education is all about risk management.  Furthermore, with an increase in heli and cat ski operations, more powerful snowmobiles, and stronger storm cycles, it seems avalanches are becoming more common each season.  In addition, accessing backcountry terrain from a resort and skiing just beyond the resort boundaries has become more popular.

Everyone wants fresh tracks.  And the chance to capture it all on film and be a GoPro Hero or Insta famous?  Yeah, that too.  Therefore, getting educated about avalanches, managing your risk, and knowing how to stay safe is a smart move for all skiers and snowboarders, even those just out hiking in potential avalanche terrain!

Even if you never plan to leave the ski resort, inbound avalanches are rare, but they can occur.  We’ve seen avalanches happen in or just adjacent to resorts like Snowbasin, Palisades Tahoe, Park City, and Alta.  Therefore, having basic avalanche safety knowledge could help save you or someone in your ski party.

Lack of avalanche education and feeling ‘safe’ near resort boundaries

The signs at many backcountry gates say, “YOU CAN DIE”.  Some say, “Are you beeping?” and have the technology installed at the sign so you can check that your beacon is working.  But, all too often, as it was on that morning in Park City, the party next to me had no beacons.  No avalanche education or avy gear.  Just the confidence from their friends that they would arrive at the bottom safely.

With a backcountry gate or a ski boundary sign so close to the ski resort trails, it somehow seems safe.  But this is far from the truth!  These areas are indeed backcountry and certainly not for novices or those without avalanche gear.  Yet we go anyway.

Overlooking Safety in Favor of Adventure

On one ski trip, a friend suggested we should scoot out the backcountry gates at the top of Vail Mountain in Colorado and head for the Minturn Mile.  This route gives you backcountry access and finishes with a toboggan-like chute into the old mining town of Minturn.

So we went.  How convenient that our last run of the day dropped into fresh powder and finished almost thirty minutes later at the famous Minturn Saloon, where you can grab a beer with friends and share the stoke of your epic adventure.  The Midturn Mile is a great way to end the day, but we were exhausted.  Had there been an avalanche, no one in my party was prepared.

We got lucky that day and many other days that followed.  So I finally decided to take an avalanche safety course to become more familiar with avalanche terrain and how to best prepare.  These recommendations are based on my notes from an American Avalanche Institute Avy 1 Class, along with a Know Before You Go presentation by the Utah Avalanche Center.

Avalanche Education Safety Tips

1. Get Avalanche Education Training

One of the first things you will learn when you start your avalanche education journey is how avalanches happen and why.  Avalanches can occur on ski slopes that have a slope angle of 30-45°.  This means the snow can slide without warning at these slope angles when loaded with new snow.

As an example, a slope angle of 30-45° includes blues and black diamond slopes in a resort.  However, slopes that are typically ‘green runs’ might be underneath a steeper slope that has the potential to slide.  In a resort, ski patrol and other team members manage the avalanche danger, often called avalanche mitigation work so that an area is safe to ski.  In the backcountry, even just outside the backcountry gates, no one manages the avalanche danger.

Other problems you may run into, literally, are terrain traps.  Here are the most common terrain traps:

• trees/tree wells
• a gully/canyon
• rocks/cliffs
• stream/river crossing

A terrain trap can increase the consequences if you are caught in an avalanche in that area.  All this information barely scratches the surface of what you would learn if you took an avalanche education class.

Avalanche Training Classes

With lots to think about on how to manage our avalanche risk while skiing or snowboarding, we picked up some books.  Then we watched a few videos.  There’s so much you can learn, at no cost, that will help you prepare for skiing or snowboarding in avalanche terrain.  Check out Avalanche.org or the Utah Avalanche Center for more FREE information and online tutorials. 

Avalanche Education Books

Here are all the avalanche books we’ve purchased:

• Avalanche Essentials by Bruce Tremper
• Snow Sense by Jill Fredston
• Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain by Bruce Tremper
• The Avalanche Handbook

After reading and researching, we signed up for an avalanche education class: The American Avalanche Institute’s Avalanche Level 1 Course, often called Avy 1.  We recommend taking an Avy 1 class AFTER you’ve read at least one of these books above, had your avy and ski touring gear for a few weeks, AND have practiced with both extensively.  If you show up to the class with rental touring skis and have never put your skins on before or used your avalanche gear, you’re in for a rough few days.

Recommended avalanche education reading for those who venture out the backcountry gates or intend to do more backcountry travel this season.

2. Get Avalanche Safety Gear

Ski and snowboard shops may be able to sell you backcountry skis or a splitboard, however, they may not carry your basic avy gear- a beacon or transceiver, shovel, and probe.  I always think this is insane!

If you only buy one item, consider an avalanche beacon or transceiver. This allows people like ski patrollers and a rescue team to find you more easily if you get buried.  It also works in the opposite way, allowing you to locate others who might be buried in an avalanche around you.

Keep in mind if an avalanche occurs, you want to have other items with you to help you and your party make it to safety, or survive long enough for help to arrive.  We also carry the following:

• Headlamp
• Adventure Medical Kit
• Two-way radios
• Emergency blanket and extra puffy jacket
• Water bottle, snacks, beanie, buff, and glove liners

We’ve found it’s good to have one pack to keep all your avalanche safety gear in.  Then you never forget anything on your way out the door.

Always travel with a buddy, and have a plan when you head out of those backcountry gates!

3. Does Your Avalanche Safety Gear Work For You?

Based on that list above, you want to make sure you can comfortably carry all of your avalanche gear on powder days.  Try skiing with a pack next time you’re heading to the resort.  Getting on and off the lifts becomes a bit more complicated, and your balance is challenged, especially on a snowboard!

If you can get to an REI or a shop that carries avalanche gear, try before you buy, especially the beacon, to make sure it will work for you.  For example, a super-lightweight shovel is great, but if you can’t actually shovel snow efficiently, don’t buy it.

It wasn’t until after our avalanche education class that we realized what gear actually worked best for us under stormy snowy conditions.  If you can test it beforehand, this will save you some money, and extra trips to REI or purchases on Amazon.com or Backcountry.com.

4. Practice Your Avalanche Education With Your Backcountry Gear

We can’t stress this one enough.  Within minutes of our first time out in the field, we realized quickly that it’s very different trying to switch your beacon into search mode or get your skins off your skis when you’re standing on top of a snowy ridgeline with the wind howling!

One of the best tips we ever got when traveling in avalanche terrain is ‘put it on, turn it on.’  This refers to your beacon or transceiver.  Whenever you strap your beacon or transceiver on your body, turn it on.  Then you’ll never forget when you get to the resort, or to the backcountry trailhead.

Also, try using your avalanche safety gear with the gloves or mittens you’re planning to ski or ride with. I quickly learned that my mittens kept me warm, but I could not operate my beacon with them on.  I could barely unzip my backpack!  Wearing a lightweight softshell liner underneath the mittens now allows me to take them off easily.  And I have those little kid glove loops attached to my gloves so I never lose them!

5. Get The Avalanche Forecast for Your Area

Knowing the current and recent conditions in the area you plan on skiing or hiking through is a key step in the Know Before You Go process.  Start looking at the forecast to become more familiar with the area.

As we spend most of our time in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, the Utah Avalanche Center’s app is downloaded to our phones and the website is bookmarked in our browser window.  Visit Avalanche.org to find your local avalanche center and then bookmark it.  We’ll wait for ya.

Learn how to read the avalanche forecast, and pay attention to avalanche conditions in areas that have the same aspect (the compass direction a slope faces) and slope angle as the place you may be heading.  Knowing the forecast will allow you to manage your risk and select a safer place to ski or snowboard.

6. Create a Plan if you will be using the Backcountry Gates

Even if you are simply exiting the backcountry gates at your local resort to score some fresh powder, do the following:

• Ensure Your Beacon is On and Transmitting
• Set an Objective
• Have a Backup Plan
• Go with a Buddy
• Be Okay with not being able to ski a line if the conditions are not in your favor!

This is so key as we are seeing more and more avalanches occur within or near resort boundaries.  Here are a few more things to consider in your plans:

Does everyone in your party have avalanche gear and know how to use it?

Do a practice beacon search together outside your rental house or hotel before you go.  Make it fun – the one who finds the buried avy pack first gets a beer!  Before leaving the parking lot, do a beacon test to ensure everyone in your party can send and receive signals.  This is often where you catch if a beacon has low batteries or one that is not functioning properly.

Don’t be swayed by the expert halo!

Choose routes that are well within the capabilities of your entire party.  Do not simply take the word of an ‘expert’ that the route or ski line you are attempting is suitable for all.  Speaking of parties, you may want to limit your group to 3-4 people or divide a larger group into smaller groups.  Keep in mind, 90% of avalanches are triggered by you or someone in your ski party.

Let someone outside of your group know your plans for the day

Having cell service is great, but be prepared to have no contact with the outside world once you set off from the trailhead or go through the backcountry gates.  Cell phone batteries may not last as long in the cold, and often being at the bottom of a canyon will block cell service altogether. 

Therefore, let someone outside your party know your plan.  In addition, having two-way radios might be helpful.  As we mentioned earlier, in the event of an avalanche, the people in your party are going to be the ones to rescue you, so pick your backcountry companions wisely.

Trailhead signage reminds you to check that your beacon is on and sending a signal.  This sign also allows you to test that beacon signal!

7. Check the Weather and Snow Conditions at the Trailhead or Resort

This means, do the conditions around you match what was forecasted?  Have they changed?  Do any of these unstable conditions exist:

• recent avalanches
• new snow
• fog
• recent warming
• wind events
• cracking or collapsing snow (that cool ‘thump’ sound isn’t so cool anymore)

8. Perform Avalanche Stability Tests and Dig Snowpits

While the information below might seem like overkill for simply going out backcountry gates, it is essential when heading out from a trailhead to access more remote backcountry terrain.

Perform stability tests on areas with similar slope angle, elevation, and aspect you plan to ski.  If you skin up a North-facing open slope, testing along the way, and all signs are good, do you think it’s safe to then ski down the adjacent East-facing slope that’s covered with trees?  Although the tree-filled glade may seem like a safe place, you haven’t tested that aspect or slope angle, and trees can be a huge terrain trap!

Dig a snow pit, and perform an extended column test or ECT along the way.  Yes, we know it takes time.  But, you’d be surprised how many times we dug a pit and got no results, and then dug another pit a few dozen feet higher, or on a different slope angle or aspect, and got full propagation or collapse.  Here’s a video of us performing an ECT:

9. Assess Group Dynamics in the Backcountry and at the Resort

You’ve made a plan, and everyone is on board and prepared.  You get to the trailhead or the backcountry gate, your friends are stoked and looking forward to powder.  However, a few minutes in, one of the members of your party is falling behind.  Someone has a wardrobe malfunction.  Another is voicing concerns- “that slope looks much steeper up close. I don’t know about this.”

Pay close attention to group dynamics.  Remember, if one person is not feeling comfortable with the agreed descent, identify safer terrain and minimize your exposure to potential avalanche terrain.

Select a leader for your party, BUT ensure everyone in your group has a voice and communicates openly.  Don’t simply trust the ‘expert’ because they say it’s safe or have skied it before!  It’s not fun to get to the top of a climb and then have to hike all the way back down, but it’s definitely better than pushing someone out of their comfort zone and creating a dangerous situation.

Most of us spend a lot of hard-earned cash on gear, travel, and accommodations to go on that ski trip or reach that backcountry trail.  However, we all want to live to ski another day, and we want to keep those friendships for a long time to come.

Communicate often with all those in your backcountry ski party and especially before heading out the backcountry gates!

10. Moving in or Through Avalanche Terrain

There I was, snowboarding down the planned route in the backcountry in Big Cottonwood Canyon and getting into knee-deep powder.  I’m stoked, my smile is big, this is what I’ve been waiting for all day!  Then I lose my edge and go down.

I spend almost 30 seconds trying to get upright again.  I’m starting to breathe heavily.  I know the bowl to my left is filled with fresh snow, on an unstable base layer, and can be triggered remotely.  I look around for my companions.  They are not dropping in to help me!  Hello??  I’m over here.  What the hell is going on!!

I learned my lesson the hard way.  In avalanche terrain, my partners were safer waiting for me to pull myself up and get moving again than to drop in and try to help.

Other tips I learned:

• Practice moving across a slope one at a time, especially in steep and unstable terrain
• Always be watching for signs of unstable terrain
• Be alert and listen for collapsing snow.  Leave your headphones at home.
• The slope you might be traversing could be gentle, but what about the terrain right above you?

Lastly, we know you want those selfies with the beautiful mountains in the background, but wait until you’re out of harm’s way to record your Insta story!

Final Thoughts on Avalanche Education

This blog post is by no means a substitute for taking a class.  Practice with your own gear and with your backcountry partner.  Choose that backcountry partner wisely!  Also, keep in mind, that education is an ongoing process.
