The Sea Otter Classic hosts over 9,600 athletes, 72,500 fans, and it’s North America’s largest cycling tradeshow!  Sea Otter is definitely the place to connect with consumers interested in road, BMX, gravel, mountain bikes, cycling gear, and apparel. 

 

2. GoPro Mountain Games:

With 83,000 spectators and over 3,000 athletes, the GoPro Mountain Games in Vail draws over 140 brands to its mountain playground every June for biking, climbing, kayaking, fishing, SUPing, and even a big air competition for dogs!

 

3. Outdoor Retailer- The OR Show:

The Outdoor Retailer Show is the perfect place if you’re seeking B2B connections with the biggest brands in the outdoor industry.  However, with the move from Utah to Colorado, then back to Utah, and now to Minneapolis in 2026, the OR Show has seen a drop-off in attendance.  In addition, still TBD whether major brands like REI, The North Face, and Patagonia will return to the show.  

Despite these setbacks, Outdoor Retailer is still one of the largest gatherings of outdoor brands in the country and a great place to showcase new products, speak with the media, and connect with retailers and distributors.

 

4. CES- Consumer Electronics Show:

If you have room in your marketing budget, the Consumer Electronics Show is the biggest tradeshow in the country and ‘the most influential tech show in the world’.  Consumers, retail buyers, and wholesale distributors all descend on Las Vegas in January to see the best of the best in tech.  Just attending the show and doing some guerrilla marketing, or hosting a pop-up shop in Vegas during the show, could get your product seen by thousands of potential new customers!  (More on creating fun event activations and a tradeshow marketing plan in a bit!)

 

5. Eurobike:

Eurobike is an annual tradeshow held in Germany that brings together renowned cycling brands, industry professionals, and cycling enthusiasts from around the globe.  While the first few days are reserved for industry insiders, the event opens its doors to the public, allowing cycling enthusiasts to experience the latest products firsthand.  Attending Eurobike presents an exceptional opportunity to showcase your brand, gain exposure, and build brand awareness within the cycling community, attracting potential customers and industry partners alike.

 

6. Overland Expo:

ProWinter is a 3-day mid-size B2B tradeshow featuring ski equipment manufacturers and outdoor gear brands.  Held in Bolzano, Italy, the ‘Gateway to the Dolomites’, ProWinter showcases new product offerings to wholesalers, retailers, and other distributors. In addition, the Dolomites’ position at the crossroads of Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany makes it a natural center for Alpine sports culture.  Add in over 40 ski resorts, world-class climbing, and cycling, and it’s easy to see why leading outdoor manufacturers like La Sportiva, Salewa, and Reusch call this region home.

Following the tradeshow, the Ski Industry Climate Summit, conceived and hosted by Atomic and led by organizations like Protect Our Winters and the Winter Sports Sustainability Network (WSN), creates space for the industry to come together around climate responsibility, from sustainable transportation strategies to tackling the complex issue of recycling sporting equipment at the end of its life. 14. FITUR at IFEMA Madrid

FITUR, held annually at IFEMA Madrid each January, is one of the world’s largest tourism trade shows, attracting around 250,000 visitors and 10,000 exhibitors from over 100 countries.

 

15. The Outside Festival:

Several years ago, a small hardgoods show- think paddle, hike, camping, and cycling- the Big Gear Show hosted its first event near the Deer Valley Ski Resort in Park City, Utah.  Fast forward a few years, and it has combined with Outside Inc. to form the Outside Festival in Denver.  This show competes with Outdoor Retailer in June and is both a B2B and B2C event.

From the Breck Epic, to Leadville MTB, the FoCoFondo, and Steamboat Gravel- SBT GRVL, these events transform Colorado into the center of the off-road universe every summer.  The world’s best riders make their way to Colorado to compete, and smart brands with a focus on mountain biking and gravel riding need to have a presence.

The town of Breckenridge sits at the center of it all, and with its epic trails, it’s a great place to gather.  Centering your visit around downtown Breck provides a great opportunity to meet with athletes, journalists, like-minded brands, and potential customers.

The Best Tradeshows Might Actually be a Sporting Event or Festival

 

As you can see from our list, the best tradeshows may not be your traditional tradeshows at all.  Although shows like Outdoor Retailer are a great place to network, if you own a small outdoor brand, you may not be able to afford the steep entrance or exhibitor fees.  In addition, many of these outdoor industry events may not be consumer-facing.

Therefore, a better option than Outdoor Retailer could be to host a booth at a sports event or festival like Bentonville Bike Fest, the GoPro Mountain Games, or the Ironman World Championships!

 

The Best Tradeshows for an International Audience

 

In addition to IPSO Munich, the Taipei International Cycle Show, FITUR Madrid, Eurobike, and ProWinter, here are a few other shows to consider for outdoor brands that want to reach an international market:

If you’re still not sure which shows to attend, how much to budget, how to keep your shop staffed, or who to send, you are not alone.  Here are a few things to think about:

 

1. What are your tradeshow costs?

 

First, add up your costs to attend each tradeshow:

• Flights, accommodations, transportation (for you, your team, and your gear/products)
• Food and beverages, hosting client dinners
• Exhibitor booth space plus booth design if you do not have a booth already

 

2. What audience does the tradeshow serve?

 

Is the tradeshow or event you’re considering consumer-facing?  Can potential buyers see, touch, test, and buy your products?

Or will this be mainly a chance to meet with retail or wholesale buyers, and get your products into new stores?

 

3. Can you set up meetings at each tradeshow?

 

You’re investing quite a lot of time and money to attend an industry tradeshow.  Therefore, are there ways you can set up meetings ahead of the show and plan out each day?

Hint: Many tradeshows now have apps or an exhibitor/vendor portal where you can schedule or request meetings, and connect with brands or buyers before you arrive!

In addition, many of the tradeshow apps let you schedule a happy hour, meet & greet, or giveaway at your booth!

 

Pro Tip: Set up meetings in advance. Otherwise, the ‘gatekeepers’ staffing the entrance to most booths at Outdoor Retailer may not seem as friendly.

 

4. What is your expected ROI for each event or tradeshow?

 

Attending one of the best tradeshows in the outdoor industry can eat up a good portion of your marketing budget.  Therefore, make sure you have goals set for what you expect to get out of each event:

• Fill a certain number of orders or directly sell products?
• Launch new products and create brand awareness?
• Collect email addresses?
• Connect with new distributors or retail stores?

 

5. Can you create a fun event activation at the tradeshow?

 

Creating a fun opportunity to engage with potential clients, generate buzz on social media, and create user-generated content at the best tradeshows is a no-brainer.  However, it’s often something left until the last minute!

Instead, plan ahead and launch or conclude a giveaway!  Host a competition at your booth to generate buzz!  Use social media to advertise it.  And remember to have a way to collect those email addresses!

 

Here are a few other ideas we’ve used:

• Bring a big wheel that people can spin to win your products or fun items with your logo on them.
• Host a booth happy hour, or a happy hour outside the show if you’re not exhibiting.
• Create a daily booth giveaway, winners must be in attendance!
• Set up a photo booth, complete with fun hats, glasses, and wigs themed to match your brand!
• Create a video testimonial booth where people can talk about your product.

 

Pro tip: You can easily set up a photo or video booth using a tripod with an iPad, or even a phone and a nice backdrop.  In order to seamlessly collect emails and have guests share their photos on social, use a photo booth app like LumaBooth, Simple Booth Halo, or Unsnapped.

Mallorca is easy to reach, whether you’re traveling from Europe or further abroad.  Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is located just a few kilometers outside Palma, the capital.  As one of Spain’s busiest airports, it receives direct flights from most European cities, including London, Paris, and Rome.  Seasonal routes also bring in travelers from the U.S. and beyond during the summer months.

If you’re already in Spain, ferries are another option.  Daily services connect Mallorca with Barcelona, Valencia, and Denia, as well as other Balearic Islands like Ibiza and Menorca.  Ferries are slower but can be convenient if you’re traveling with a car and pets.  If you’re traveling by plane, renting a car is highly recommended once on the island for easy access to hiking, beaches, and remote villages that aren’t well-served by public transport.

When searching to make your travel arrangements, be aware that Mallorca may also appear written as Majorca or Maiorca, but they are all the same island.

What Makes the Dolomites Special?

Before we dive into the adventures, it’s important to know a little about the history of the Dolomites and why this region has a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.

The moment you arrive in the Dolomites, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a world apart from the rest of Italy.  The architecture has a storybook alpine charm. The food blends hearty mountain flavors with Italian and Tyrolean traditions.  Lastly, you’ll hear three main languages—from Italian to German to Ladin or Ladino—that instantly remind you this region has its own unique identity.

Much of this distinct character comes from the Dolomites’ history and geography.  The rugged peaks of the region once kept villages isolated, where locals farmed, raised livestock, and learned to thrive in the harsh alpine climate (many towns sit at 5,000 feet or higher!).  For centuries, the area was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and even today the German influence is woven into daily life—from the menus in mountain huts to the signs along winding roads.  Ladin, an ancient language, is still spoken proudly in some valleys, preserving a culture that’s endured through centuries.

Although the Dolomites officially became part of Italy in 1919, after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the region’s blend of Italian passion and Austrian precision continues to make it one of the most fascinating cultural crossroads in Europe.

Regional Names and Languages Spoken in the Dolomites

The Dolomites area was called ‘Tyrol’ or ‘Tirol County’ by the Holy Roman Empire.  Tyrol or South Tyrol is still used, and Tyrolean architecture and food dominate the region.  In addition, the Ladin language, or ‘Ladino’, and the farming culture have been preserved through the centuries.

When you visit, you will see signs in Italian, Ladin, and German.  All three languages are spoken here and are the official languages of the region.  We’ll use both the Ladin and Italian names for places throughout this blog when possible.

Lastly, in case you are wondering how the Dolomites got their name, it’s thanks to French geologist Déodat de Dolomieu, who first identified the rocky mineral ‘dolomite’ in the 18th century.  Dolomite is similar to limestone, with a striking pale and jagged appearance.  It creates a dramatic landscape when complemented by shimmering alpine lakes, quaint Tyrolean villages, and rolling alpine meadows dotted with cows and sheep.

Dolomites Adventure Travel Tips: How to Get There

The Dolomites are part of the Alps and are located in northeastern Italy.  Within a few hours, you can reach the borders of Austria, Switzerland, and Germany.

If you plan to fly to begin your Dolomites adventure travel, there are several international airports nearby:

• Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) – 2.5 hours
• Milan Malpensa (MXP)- 4-4.5 hours
• Innsbruck Airport (INN) – Located in Austria, 2 hrs
• Munich Airport (MUC)- Located in Germany, 3.5 hrs

In addition, there are also smaller airports like Verona (VRN), Treviso (TSF), and Bolzano (BZO), which are perfect if you’re coming from nearby EU countries or London and the UK.  The closest airport to the Dolomites is in Bolzano, which is about 22 miles or 40 minutes away.

From all major airports, renting a car is the best way to get around.  Public transportation can be limited in towns like Val Gardena, Canazei, Castelrotto, and Alta Badia.  Even Cortina d’Ampezzo does not have a dedicated train line!  This could prove challenging during the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics, as parking is very limited in Cortina.

Speaking of trains, there is service to the Dolomites region from cities like Rome, Venice, and Milan to Bolzano.  However, you’ll have to take a bus, hire a tour guide, or rent a car to explore deep into the Dolomiti region.  If you are interested in arriving by train, you’ll want to book tickets to one of the following stations:

• Bolzano/Bolzen, if coming from Rome, Milan, or other points south and west
• Bressanone, if you’re coming from the north in Switzerland or Austria
• Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore-Cortina– if arriving from Venice and heading to Cortina

If you’re looking for more scenic train travel, check out the Glacier Express, which goes from Zermatt to St. Moritz, or the Bernina Express.  This beautiful scenic train ride crosses 196 bridges and 55 tunnels through the Swiss Alps from St. Moritz to Tirano, Italy!

Hiking along the Seceda ridgeline is not for the faint of heart, but you’ll be rewarded with incredible views, even if the foggy mist rises up from the valley below!

Top 10 Things To Do On Your Dolomites Adventure Travels

When it comes to Dolomites adventure travel, there are so many activities to fill your days that you’ll find it hard to sit still.  We’ve settled in and are still discovering new things every day.  Below are our Top 10 Things To Do in the Dolomites.

1. Explore the Seceda Ridgeline and Val Gardena

First up in our Dolomites adventure travel itinerary is to hike around the iconic peaks of the Val Gardena region, the most notable being the Seceda ridgeline above Ortisei.  The easiest way to reach Seceda is via the Ortisei-Furnes-Seceda cable car, which departs from Ortisei in Val Gardena and takes you up to 2,500 meters in just minutes!  Once at the top, you’ll find a stunning network of hiking trails, from easy panoramic walks to more challenging treks in the Puez-Odle Nature Park.

As Seceda is one of the most popular destinations in the Dolomites, here are some insider tips to explore the area without having to wait in lines or feel like cattle following the herd.  Instead of taking the Ortisei-Furnes-Seceda cable car, park at the Col Raiser gondola station.  At the top of the Col Raiser, you can access the Puez-Odle Nature Park and Seceda by hiking up through the rolling alpine meadows.  Another great option is to park at Cristauta above Santa Cristina and hike up to the cross at Sëurasas and then onto Seceda.

Whether you head straight to the Seceda summit or opt for Col Raiser or Sëurasas, warm, inviting rifugios dot the alpine landscape.  Our favorite family-run refugio off the beaten path is the Baita Sëurasas Hutte.  Here, you’ll have no problem getting a table or a lounge chair, and can peacefully enjoy the delicious South Tyrolean cuisine with breathtaking views across Val Gardena to Sassolungo!  The more popular spots, such as Baita Sofie Hütte and Baita Daniel Hütte, also offer cozy alpine hospitality but can be crowded in the summer months.

Whether you visit in summer for hiking or winter for skiing, the Seceda and peaks around Val Gardena offer the most spectacular vistas in the entire Dolomites.

2. Go Hiking and Rock Climbing at Cinque Torri

The Dolomites are a legendary hiking and climbing destination that attracts visitors from around the world.  Here you’ll find thousands of trails, along with climbing routes ranging from beginner-friendly to expert-only.  Many climbs date back to the early 1900s, with famous climbers like Reinhold Messner, Emilio Comici, and other pioneers setting challenging routes.

One of the most popular areas for hiking and climbing in the Dolomites is Cinque Torri.  Cinque Torri is a stunning rock formation known for its towering spires that attract hikers, climbers, and history enthusiasts.  The rock is dolomite or limestone in most areas, meaning big pockets, sharp edges, and lots of interesting features.  In addition, this area is also famous for its WWI open-air ‘museum’, featuring restored trenches and military outposts from the war.

To get there, take the Cinque Torri chairlift from Bai de Dones, just a 20-minute drive from Cortina d’Ampezzo.  Once you reach the top, you’ll arrive at Rifugio Scoiattoli.  From here, it’s a few minutes’ walk on a gently sloping path with spectacular alpine scenery to reach Cinque Torri.

The trails around Cinque Torri offer breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks, including Tofane and the Lagazuoi Massif.  Whether you’re hiking, climbing, or simply enjoying the views, Cinque Torri is a must-visit in the Dolomites!  As Cinque Torri is quite popular and can become crowded in the summer, quieter climbing and hiking areas include:

• Vallunga/Langetal- At the western end of Val Gardena, great, easy sport climbing and hiking
• Passo Falzarego- Great hiking and climbing
• Marmolada- good for experienced big wall climbers
• Tre Cime di Lavaredo- multi-pitch alpine routes

If you want to try rock climbing in the Dolomites and are new to the sport, hire a guide.  Most towns offer guiding services, like Val Gardena Mountain Guides, Alta Badia Guides, or Guide Alpine Cortina.  Going with a guide means they’ll take care of the gear, ensure the route selection is within your abilities, and you won’t get lost!

3. Ski the Sella Ronda

One of the most famous circuits in the Dolomites, the Sella Ronda, takes you on a breathtaking ski loop around the Sella Massif.  The Sella Ronda route connects four major ski resort towns: Val Gardena, Corvara in Alta Badia, Arabba, and Canazei/Val di Fassa.  You can ride the Sella Ronda clockwise (orange route) or counter-clockwise (green route), and there is signage at each resort to help you find your way.

You will need a Dolomiti Superski pass, and be prepared for a long day.  However, the Sella Ronda passes mountain refugios at the top of the climbs and the villages in the valleys, so you’ll always have a place to stop, rest, and refuel.

With over 1,200 kilometers of ski slopes and 450 lifts, Dolomiti Superski is one of the largest ski areas in the world and includes many other resorts than just the four mentioned above. Whether you’re carving down perfectly groomed runs or exploring off-piste terrain, this interconnected network of resorts offers something for every level of skier.  In addition, the slopes around Cortina d’Ampezzo are on the Dolomiti Superski!

Sella Ronda Distance: 25 miles/ 40 km
Elevation Gain/Loss: 7,800ft (2,400m) descent, you’ll get uphill by ski lift/cable car
Time Required: 4–6 hours (without long breaks)
Difficulty: Intermediate (some red runs, no black runs required)

The Dolomite Superski gives you access to over 12 ski resorts, 16 ski areas, 450 lifts, and incredible views around every turn!

4. Explore by Bicycle on Your Dolomites Adventure Travels

Cycling in the Dolomites is filled with exhilarating climbs and descents that take your breath away.  There are plenty of bike shops throughout the Dolomites, Intersport and On the Rocks in Val Gardena, or 2ue&2ue in Cortina d’Ampezzo.  You can rent a road bike, gravel bike, or e-bike, a helmet, and pick up any other gear you might have left at home.

You can also ride the Sella Ronda (mentioned above) by bike and loop around the roads that connect each valley of the Sella Group- Val Gardena, Corvara in Alta Badia, Arabba, and Canazei/Val di Fassa.  If you choose to do the Sella Ronda bike route, here are the details for the road bike route only:

Distance: 36 miles/ 58km- start in any of the 4 valleys/resorts
Elevation Gain/Loss: 5,900ft ascending (1,800m), 5,900ft descending (1,800m)
Time Required: 4–6 hours (depending on fitness level)
Difficulty: Challenging (steep climbs/descents, high altitude, winding roads and lots of traffic!)

Cycling without Car Traffic and Steep Climbing

Besides cycling the Sella Ronda, which you can ride almost all year round (when the roads are clear of snow), don’t miss the times when they are also free from car traffic!  These include the Maratona dles Dolomites, a famous cycling event in July, Dolomiti Bike Day, and the Sella Ronda Bike Day is a car-free day for cyclists held twice a year, in June and September.

Lastly, if you are searching for routes that are flat AND free from car traffic, there are not many in the Dolomiti. Separate bike paths, paved and gravel, include:

• Bolzano to Chiusa and Bressanone
• San Vito di Cadore to Cortina and Dobbiaco
• Ortisei to Selva

5. Visit Lago di Braies, Lago Sorapis, and the Dolomiti Lakes Region

No Dolomites trip is complete without visiting its picturesque alpine lakes, and Lago di Braies or Pragser Wildsee is on the top of everyone’s list.  With its stunning emerald waters reflecting the wild mountain peaks, Lago di Braies can be packed in the summertime, so plan to visit early in the morning.

Another Dolomiti lake that tops everyone’s list is often Lago di Sorapis.  This lake is different than Lago di Braies as you cannot simply drive up and park in a giant parking lot.  Instead, you have to park at Passo Tre Croci and hike in to reach Lago di Sorapis.  The round-trip hike is about 7-8 miles (11-13km) and takes about 4-5 hours to complete.

The hike to Lago di Sorapis is an extremely popular hike, so plan to arrive early to get parking, and avoid hiking in the middle of summer.  The crowds on the trail, plus the summer heat, make the hike to Lago di Sorapis not only challenging but also dangerous.

While visiting the lakes of the Dolomites, rent a boat, a kayak, or hike the loop around the lake.  Swimming is not allowed in Lago di Braies, Lago di Sorapis, and many others to maintain their pristine condition. In addition, most Dolomiti alpine lakes barely get to 60 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, so it would not make for a fun swim.

Other beautiful, and less crowded alpine lakes to add to your Dolomites adventure travel itinerary include:

• Lago di Misurina
• Lago di Dobbiaco (our favorite near Cortina)
• Lago di Landro (you can swim here!)
• Lago Federa and Croda da Lago (hike in from Malga Federa)
• Spiaggia Verde (literally the ‘green beach’- you can sunbathe and swim in the river!)

6. Try a Via Ferrata

The Dolomites are home to an extensive network of via ferratas, and this is one of our favorite things to do during our Dolomites adventure travels!  A via ferrata (Italian for “iron path”) is a climbing route equipped with steel cables, ladders, and iron rungs.  While you ascend rocks the way a rock climber would, via ferratas differ in that they have protection already in place.  You will, however, need to wear a climbing harness and use a special lanyard system, like the Petzl Scorpio, when climbing a via ferrata.

Via ferratas were originally built during World War I in the Dolomites to help soldiers move through the mountains.  Along the routes, you’ll find old war bunkers, trenches, tunnels, and signage about the battles fought.  Today, more routes have been added to offer an exciting mix of climbing and hiking, making alpine peaks accessible to adventurous travelers.

If you’ve never done a via ferrata before and you are not a climber, go with a guide.  They can provide gear and navigation, and you will learn the techniques of climbing a via ferrata.  Here’s our favorite Dolomiti via ferratas to include in your adventure travel plans:

Via Ferrata Tridentina- Sella Group

The Via Ferrata Tridentina is a classic, offering spectacular views from the Refugio Pisciadù and a suspension bridge.
Location: Alta Badia, Sella Group
Time: 3-4 hours
Effort: Moderate

Via Ferrata Piz da Cir

Via Ferrata Piz da Cir is a short but scenic route in the Puez–Odle group of the Dolomites, perfect for those seeking a half-day adventure. The trailhead starts at Passo Gardena (2,121 m), but is easily reached by taking the Dantercepies cable car.  An uphill hike of about 20 minutes from the refugio at the top of the cable car brings you to the base of the via ferrata.

Location: Val Gardena Pass/ Sella Group
Time: 1.5-2 hours
Effort: Easy to moderate. Suitable for fit beginners or as a warm-up for more challenging routes!

Via Ferrata Ra Pegna, Ra Bujela and Olivieri in Cortina

There are extensive networks of via ferratas around Cortina, and these are often the most easily accesible and scenic routes.

Location: Near Cortina on the Tofane (use ski lifts to access)
Time: 1 hour for Ra Pegna and Ra Bujela, 2 hours for via ferrata Olivieri
Effort: Ra Pegna and Ra Bujela are easy, perfect for beginners. Olivieri is more challenging and exposed.

One of the most photographed lakes of the Dolomites, Lago di Braies, is on every traveler’s list! In the winter, it’s covered in snow, but in the summer, you can rent a boat and paddle around the lake.

7. Go Mountain Biking: The Sella Ronda MTB

Riding the Sella Ronda by mountain bike is one of our favorite adventures of our Dolomites travels!  We rented bikes and helmets at Intersport in Val Gardena; however, there are several bike shops in each town along the route.  Make sure to pick up a Sella Ronda MTB map at the bike shop and buy a Dolomiti Supersummer Pass.  Plan your day, leave extra time for stops, and avoid getting stuck when the lifts close for the day.

If you want to make it harder, you can ride uphill instead of taking a lift, but we recommend taking the ski lifts or cable cars.  Then you can truly enjoy the sweeping descents as you plummet thousands of feet into the valleys below!

Distance: 36 miles/58km
Elevation Gain/Loss: 1,500ft (450m) gained (mostly you’ll take lifts), 13,629ft descending!!
Time Required: 6-8 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

Besides cycling the Sella Ronda, there are lots of flow trails and groomed bike parks in the Dolomites.  Many ski lifts and gondolas will accommodate mountain bikes, so you can take the lifts up and enjoy lapping the big descents all day!

8. Hike the Tre Cime Lavaredo Loop

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo Loop is one of the most iconic hikes in the Dolomites, with breathtaking views of the famous three towering peaks.  This moderate 6.2-mile (10km) loop takes about 3-4 hours to complete and starts from Rifugio Auronzo, which is accessible by car or shuttle bus from Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The well-marked trail winds past Rifugio Lavaredo and climbs to Forcella Lavaredo, where you’ll get stunning close-up views of the Tre Cime’s north faces.  Continuing around the loop, you’ll pass Rifugio Locatelli, an excellent stop for a meal with panoramic vistas.  This hike is best done in early summer (May-July) and then again in the fall when the trails are clear of snow.  In August, the Tre Cime Lavaredo area is packed and a reservation is needed to get a parking spot!

There are so many things to do in the Dolomites, but sometimes just sitting and watching the cows in Alpe d’Suisi is enough for me! Stay at least a few nights at an Agriturismo to learn about the farming culture practiced for centuries.

9. Visit Alpe di Siusi-Seiser Alm

Visiting Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), Europe’s largest high alpine meadow, is a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.  This vast plateau offers breathtaking views of the Sassolungo and Sciliar peaks, and lush green pastures dotted with traditional wooden huts.

You can reach Alpe di Siusi by cable car from Ortisei (St. Ulrich) or Castelrotto (Kastelruth).  Private cars are restricted in Alpe di Siusi during peak hours unless you’re a resident, to help preserve this pristine landscape.

In summer, Alpe di Siusi is a paradise for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, while in winter, it transforms into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing wonderland.  The area is home to charming rifugios where you can enjoy local South Tyrolean specialties like speck, dumplings, and apple strudel while soaking in the stunning alpine scenery.

10. Take the Cable Car to Sassolungo/Langkofel

Taking the cable car up to Sassolungo (Langkofel) is an incredible way to experience the heart of the Dolomites, and I think we saved the best for last.  The Forcella Sassolungo lift, a unique two-person standing cable car, departs from Passo Sella and ascends to Forcella del Sassolungo at 8,796ft (2,681m).  The ride itself is an adventure, just getting into the cable car is an adventure!! 

At the top, you can explore Rifugio Toni Demetz, a cozy mountain hut with spectacular panoramas and delicious local food.  From here, hikers can descend into the Sassolungo Group or continue to the Friedrich August trail for a stunning trek along the ridgeline.

There’s also great rock climbing at Sassolungo or nearby at the Città di Sassi.  Whether you’re a hiker, climber, or simply want to enjoy the views, traveling in the Sassolungo cable car is a must-do in the Dolomites!

From Val Gardena, take the tiny cable car up to the top of the Sassolungo and enjoy the views from the Rifugio Toni Demetz!

Where to Stay During Your Dolomites Travels

The villages of the Dolomites are a mix of traditional alpine mountain towns, charming ski resorts, and small rural settlements that blend Italian, Austrian, and Ladin cultures.  Many have a Tyrolean feel, with wooden chalets, frescoed churches, and pedestrian walkways closed to car traffic.

In addition, if you’re buying a Dolomiti Superski or Supersummer Pass, ensure the towns you’re visiting are on the pass.  There are so many Dolomiti villages and 12 ski resorts to choose from!  Here are the best Dolomites towns to use as a base for exploring the area:

1. Cortina d’Ampezzo:

A premier luxury resort town close to Cinque Torre, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Lago Misurina, and Lago di Braies.  The 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics featured several events on the slopes of Cortina!

2. Ortisei/St. Ulrich (Val Gardena):

A bustling town close to Bolzano (the closest major city to the Dolomites) and with access to Alpe di Suisi, Castelrotto, and the famous Seceda ridgeline.

3. Selva/Wolkenstein or Santa Cristina (Val Gardena):

Val Gardena’s quieter, more central locations for skiing and mountain biking are Selva/Wolkenstein and Santa Cristina.  We live in Santa Cristina, and if you do plan to visit the area, please let us know!

4. Madonna di Campiglio:

A stylish resort town in the southern Dolomites with a lively atmosphere and close to Lago di Garda, Acro (great climbing area), and Trento.

5. Canazei (Val di Fassa):

A charming ski town with access to the Sella Ronda, and close to Cinque Torre.

Mountain Rifugios & Agriturismos

In addition to the Dolomites villages we’ve highlighted, we highly recommend booking a night or two at a mountain refugio (or rifugio).  The refugios are often accessible by ski lift, cable car, or by hiking up from the valley.  Most refugios will offer meals, accommodations, and a well-stocked bar.  They’ll also have nice open spaces both inside and outside to relax.  There is no central booking system for the Dolomites refugios.  Your best bet is to find a refugio close to the town you want to explore, then look up their website for more information on booking a night.

We stayed at the Rifugio Scoiattoli at Cinque Torri, which was the highlight of our trip!  It also allowed us more time to hike and climb in the Cinque Torri area.  We spent evenings there watching the sunset, enjoying an Aperol spritz while the last hikers departed downhill and the goats and sheep slowly made their way up.  It was like a fairy tale.

In addition to staying at a mountain rifugio, experience traditional Ladin and farming culture by spending a night at an Agriturismo (Agriturismi).  We spent a week at the Larciunëi de Sot in Selva Val Gardena and had the chance to meet all the animals, plus we had fresh eggs, milk, and bread delivered to our apartment daily!

The views from Rifugio Scoiattoli at Cinque Torri are simply unbelievable! Whether summer or wintertime, staying at a refugio is one of the best ways to experience the Dolomites!

Skiing the Venues of the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics

Skiing or snowboarding at the venues featured during the 2026 Winter Olympics & Paralympics in Milano-Cortina is an unforgettable experience.  Cortina d’Ampezzo hosted key events like Alpine Skiing, Bobsled, Luge, Curling, and both Para Skiing and Para Snowboarding.

An hour from Cortina, you’ll find even more Olympic venues: Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, and Cross-Country Skiing were held near Predazzo in Val di Fiemme.  Then, north of Cortina, the biathlon took place in Anterselva (Antholz).

Final Thoughts on Planning a Dolomites Adventure Travel Itinerary

The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most stunning mountain ranges in the world.  From dramatic peaks, pristine alpine lakes, and world-class outdoor activities, the Dolomites are a dream destination for adventure travelers, and it’s why we’ve chosen to call this place home.

With majestic views just outside your doorstep and trails suitable for all levels, everyone can enjoy the outdoors in the Dolomites.  In addition, many high alpine trails can be easily accessed from towns throughout the Dolomites thanks to an abundance of gondolas and cable cars.  Keep in mind, gondolas and ski lifts close at the end of the ski season (late March- early April), and then re-open in May/June through early November for summertime activities.

Even if you’re not up for a big hike, taking a cable car up to one of the many mountain-top refugios can be quite exhilarating and an adventure in itself.

Why Ecuador is a Biodiversity Hot Spot

Ecuador’s exceptional biodiversity comes from its unique geographic location.  This small South American country spans the equator (yes, you can visit the Mitad del Mundo- the center of the world just north of Quito!), the rugged Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest, and the often desert-like Pacific coast.  Finally, there are isolated islands of the Galápagos, where you can see animals found nowhere else on Earth!

A Rich History Shaped by Ancient Civilizations and Spanish Colonization

Before the Inca Empire took hold, over a dozen indigenous cultures thrived in Ecuador.  The Quechua was the largest tribe and lived in the Andes mountain range.  Each indigenous tribe maintained traditional customs and languages and farmed the lands as their ancestors had for centuries.  The Inca civilization rose to power in 1463, however, their reign only lasted until the Spanish arrived in the mid-1500s, leading to nearly 300 years of colonial rule.

Spanish conquistadores and missionaries subdued the native communities, converted many Ecuadorians to Christianity, and subjected them to forced labor.  The Spanish built churches over ancient temples and sacred spaces to establish dominance and facilitate the spread of Christianity.  In addition, since the indigenous tribes had no immunity to diseases like smallpox, this led to a significant decline in their population.

Ecuador gained independence from Spain in 1822 and today celebrates both its indigenous roots and colonial influences.  We recommend booking a city or cultural walking tour when you arrive in Quito.  Connect with Jhonatan Quitilanda at Bacan Ecuador Tours to set up a private or group tour.  Jhonatan met us at our hotel, and as we walked, he revealed the area’s deep traditions and cultural importance.

Getting to Ecuador: Fly into Quito or Guayaquil

International flights to Ecuador will land in two major cities: Quito and Guayaquil.  Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) is ideal for travelers who want to explore the Andes mountains and the Amazon. Guayaquil’s José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) is a bustling modern city, with an industrious coastal port that serves as a gateway to the Galapagos Islands.  We learned quickly upon researching our trip that many travelers to Ecuador head straight to the Galapagos Islands and never leave the airport to visit mainland Ecuador.  What an absolute shame!  I vowed that our trip and the writing of this blog would help to promote the best outdoor activities in Ecuador in areas other than the Galapagos.

We flew into Quito to spend more time in the Andes and the Amazon.  Quito is located at 9,000ft., it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its historic center is one of the largest and best-preserved colonial centers in Latin America!  The city’s historic district is characterized by beautiful baroque architecture, charming plazas, and churches that showcase a blend of European and indigenous influences.

Travel tip: From Quito, you can drive an hour north to the town of Otavalo, known for its vibrant indigenous market!

Getting Around Ecuador: Private Shuttles, Tours, and Car Rentals

Once you arrive in Ecuador, you can easily find a taxi, private car, or a shuttle to bring you to your accommodations.  You can also book in advance through your hotel or adventure tour operator to have someone meet you at the airport.  In addition, the bus system connects all the major cities with smaller towns and is very inexpensive.  However, it can take hours to reach your destination by bus.  We also heard about petty theft in busy bus terminals and on the buses themselves, so be watchful of your belongings if you choose to go this route.

After visiting Quito, we rented a car and drove south along the Avenue of the Volcanos to reach Cotopaxi and Baños.  Both Quito and Guayaquil have a few rental car agencies, however, do not expect the wide variety of cars nor the quick customer service you are used to in the States.  Practice patience, and start practicing your Spanish at the rental counter!

Driving in Ecuador is not for the faint of heart.  If you are comfortable driving in places like Mexico or Costa Rica, you’ll be fine here.  If not, hire a driver or book day trips with a reputable tour operator like Rebecca Adventure Travel and let them worry about the cows on the road and oncoming traffic in your lane!

Travel tip: If you have limited time, instead of driving hours on sketchy mountain roads, opt for a short domestic flight between major hubs like Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, and Manta.

Try horseback riding from Tambopaxi Lodge in Cotopaxi National Park where you’ll have your own guide, a Chagra, a thick wool poncho to keep you warm, and endless views of the highlands and Cotopaxi!

Best Outdoor Activities in Ecuador

If you love getting outside in nature, whether that’s hiking, biking, or scuba diving, you will love Ecuador.  Here are the best outdoor activities in Ecuador for adventurous travelers:

1. Hike in the Andes Mountains

The stunning Andes mountain range runs north to south down the center of Ecuador and is known for its high concentration of active volcanos.  There are over 84 volcanos in Ecuador, with Cotopaxi being the most popular.  Below are a few high-altitude treks you can do in the Andes, even if you do not plan on summiting a volcano.

Keep in mind, the peaks of most of Ecuador’s volcanos will be glaciated and require technical climbing skills along with the use of crampons and ice axes.  If you do not have a lot of experience hiking at altitude, it’s best to book with a guide service or adventure tour operator.  We’ve made some recommendations below.

Rucu Pichincha

Just to the west of Quito is Pichincha at 15,696 feet.  It has two main peaks: Rucu Pichincha and Guagua Pichincha.  Take the TelefériQo from Quito to gain 3,000 feet of elevation and begin your hike at 13,000 feet.  This is a very doable, non-technical hike and you will not need a guide.  However, you should be comfortable hiking at high altitudes with some good exposure, which you’ll encounter as you scramble the last few hundred feet to the summit!  Even if you don’t make it to the summit, there are beautiful views from all the trails at the top of the teleférico, and you can also go horseback riding or meet alpacas!

Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi’s summit is at 19,347 feet, and can only be attempted with a guide.  However, you can hike to the José Rivas Refugio on Cotopaxi at 15,958 feet without a guide.  To do this, drive up to the car park at 15,000ft.  Just getting up the switchbacks to the car park is an adventure in itself!  We recommend getting a ride or having a 4-wheel drive.  Once you step out of the car, you’ll quickly feel the altitude, and each step higher only becomes more challenging as you slog through volcanic soil.  Plan on an hour to hike 1,000 feet to reach the José Rivas Refugio.  Then take in the view while sipping a coffee or enjoying a meal before descending to the car park.

The José Rivas Refugio also serves as a base for climbers attempting to summit Cotopaxi, providing bunkrooms and hot meals.  Climbers and their guides usually spend the night, rise before dawn, and make the final ascent to the summit.  If summiting Cotopaxi is something you are interested in, contact Ramiro Garrido, an official IFMGA and UIAGM-certified mountain guide in Ecuador.  We met Ramiro at Tambopaxi Lodge, and over shared meals, we learned so much about the region, the geology, and the guiding culture.  Ramiro can help you organize an expedition, provide the best dates to visit, and suggest ways in which to prepare.  Reaching the summit of Cotopaxi is never guaranteed, yet there is the potential to summit other volcanos such as Pichincha, Cayambe, or Antisana which are less demanding.

In addition to hiking Cotopaxi, there are many other day hikes and scenic lakeside trails to explore while visiting the park.  We recommend staying at Tambopaxi Lodge as it’s the only accommodation within Cotopaxi National Park and it makes a great home base for acclimatizing, wildlife viewing, and horseback riding.

Chimborazo

Chimborazo is the tallest volcano in Ecuador at 20,548 feet and it’s located at the southern end of the Avenue of the Volcanos.  Stay at the Chimborazo Lodge to explore the nearby hiking trails and wildlife.

Quilotoa Crater

The Quilotoa Loop is a high-altitude trek passing through remote Andean villages and ending at the breathtaking crater lake of Quilotoa.  Stay nearby at the Hacienda La Alegria, a family horse farm near the Quilotoa Crater.

Hiking to the Jose Rivas Refugio on Cotopaxi is no small feat as you’ll gain 1,000 feet of elevation and top out at almost 16,000ft!

2. Explore the Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Basin is among the most biodiverse regions on Earth and exploring here should be near the top of your best outdoor activities in Ecuador itinerary.  If you love spotting wildlife, from howler monkeys and jaguars to pink river dolphins, you will enjoy exploring the Amazon rainforest.

The villages of Baños de Agua Santa and Tena are known as the “Gateways to the Amazon”.  In both towns, you will find dozens of adventure tour operators like GeoTours who can organize day trips to go mountain biking, hiking, white-water rafting, or canyoneering!   For those who want to go deeper into the Amazon, visit Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve and Yasuni National Park.

Our favorite place to stay was just outside of Baños at Hosteria Finca Chamanapamba.  This sprawling treehouse, built into the rainforest by a German family, is within walking distance to the Ruta de Las 7 Cascadas!  You’ll fall asleep to the cacophony of jungle sounds and water flowing over the rocks just a few hundred feet away!

3. Hike to the Waterfalls Along La Ruta de Cascada

The area around Baños is also home to La Ruta de Las Cascadas, the Waterfall Route.  Heading east from Baños towards Puyo, you’ll have about ten stops along La Ruta de Las Cascadas, each to visit a new waterfall.  You can get there by car, by bike, or by bus to explore the waterfalls.  Once you reach a stop, each waterfall will require lots of hiking, often down dozens of sketchy stairs built with MacGyver-like precision into the side of steep moss-covered cliffs.  Our kind of type 2 fun!

In Baños you can rent mountain bikes, book with an adventure tour operator, or take your rental car as we did.  Our favorite waterfall hike was to the Pailon Del Diablo or the Devil’s Cauldron, which you can check out here!

Instead of hiking to all the waterfalls in one day, enjoy your adventures over a couple of days and combine them with other activities like Tibetan bridge crossings, swinging at the Casa de Arbol, soaking in thermal hot springs, flying over the canyons in cable cars, or zip-lining.  Exploring La Ruta de Las Cascadas was one of the best outdoor activities in Ecuador, and should be at the top of your adventure travel itinerary!

4. Soak in Ecuador’s Hot Springs

In this region of volcanic activity, it’s no surprise that Baños is home to several thermal pools and hot springs.  If you didn’t know, Baños de Agua Santa means ‘Baths of Holy Water,’ and the active Tungurahua volcano provides mineral-rich hot springs that can be easily accessed at two locations open to the public:

• Termas de La Virgen– located at the foot of la Virgen waterfall in the town of Baños
• Balneario El Salado– a smaller establishment with a more local vibe just west of Baños

In addition to these public locations, which charge a nominal fee and require you to wear a bathing cap, many hotels have pools heated by the thermal waters flowing through Baños from Tungurahua.  Whichever you choose, a soak in the hot springs after a day of adventure feels extra special!

5. Go Birdwatching in the Mindo Cloud Forest

Exploring outdoor activities in Ecuador often means getting off the beaten path to more remote areas.  Travel two hours from Quito to reach Mindo, a small village in the cloud forest known for its rich biodiversity.  Here you can hike or ride cable cars high above the forest floor and spot dozens of different species of toucans, butterflies, and hummingbirds.  You can also go zip-lining, hike to waterfalls, and visit the Yumbo Chocolate Factory!

Book a day trip from Quito to Mindo, or plan to stay overnight to fully immerse yourself in the cloud forest experience.  If you want to stay, check out Hacienda San Vicente or “The Yellow House” which has hiking trails right from the property into the Mindo Cloud Forest.

6. Visit the Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos are a world-renowned destination for wildlife enthusiasts and marine adventurers.  You can fill your days with outdoor activities like snorkeling with sea lions, scuba diving with hammerhead sharks, and meeting giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies.  This protected island chain lies 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, so a flight from the mainland is necessary.

There is a daily limit of visitors to the Galápagos Islands to maintain its rare and pristine environment.  Therefore, you must book in advance.  Once you arrive at the Galápagos, landing at the tiny airstrip in Baltra, you’ll often board a small 20-person cruise to reach the islands of Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, and others in the archipelago.

Travel tip: If traveling to the Galápagos doesn’t work with your itinerary, there are other places where you can snorkel or spot blue-footed boobies- keep reading to find out!

The opportunity to spot wildlife in Ecuador is incredible once you get off the beaten path. In the highlands along the Avenue of the Volcanos, look for Andean foxes!

7. Visit a Farm to See Llamas and Alpacas, and Go Horseback Riding

As you travel outside of the major cities in Ecuador’s Andes region, you will quickly enter rolling farmland and major agricultural areas.  With its rich volcanic soil and diverse climate, Ecuador is a top producer of fruits and vegetables indigenous to the Andes.  In addition, you’ll find most farms raising horses and cows, along with llamas and alpacas.  Spotting a herd of llamas or alpacas in the Andean highlands is quite common as these animals are native to the region and are used by the indigenous communities of Ecuador.  Even more modernized farms may raise alpacas and llamas for their prized wool or as pack animals to transport goods.

Alpacas in particular have risen in popularity and are quite the tourist attraction with their big expressive eyes, fluffy coats, and gentle demeanor.  To guarantee a meet-and-greet with a herd of alpacas your best bet is to book a farm stay.  Look for a ‘finca or hacienda‘.  Hacienda Zuleta is a gorgeous working farm near Quito and Otavalo.  In addition, El Cajas National Park outside of Cuenca or the Reserva de Produccion Faunistica Chimborazo (Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve) are great places to spot alpacas, llamas, and the elusive vicuñas and Andean foxes.  Finally, there’s a herd of llamas in Quito roaming in Parque Metropolitano Guanguiltagua!

8. Surf, Scuba Dive, and Go Whale Watching on Ecuador’s Pacific Coast

Outdoor activities in Ecuador can also extend into the ocean and underwater.  For surfers, there are several beach towns including Montañita, known for its lively atmosphere, and Ayampe a much quieter spot on the northern beaches.  Here you can rent surfboards and take a lesson, or lie back, relax, and sip a margarita under a palapa!  In addition, Los Frailes Beach, within Machalilla National Park, is another serene spot where you can snorkel right off the shore!

If you love marine life, stop in Puerto López and book a guided day trip to Isla de la Plata.  Known as the poor man’s Galapagos, Isla de la Plata is a protected area located within Machalilla National Park, and is about two hours by boat from Puerto López.  Once on Isla de la Plata, you can snorkel with green sea turtles and manta rays, or hike to see blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, giant frigates, and albatross.  Visiting Isla de la Plata was the highlight of our time on the coast and we recommend booking with Machalilla Tours for snorkeling or scuba diving.

Travel tip: Visit between June through September to witness humpback whales making their annual migration from Antarctica to the nutrient-rich waters off Ecuador’s coastline.

Outdoor Activities in Ecuador: Health Advisories and Safety

While enjoying outdoor activities in Ecuador, it’s essential to prioritize health and safety.  If you’ve already begun your Ecuador travel searches, you’ll notice a lot of “Is it safe to travel to Ecuador?” blogs and forums.  It’s a smart question to ask, as there has been a recent uptick in crime.  Here is the answer to that ‘Is Ecuador safe’ question along with a few other questions to consider before you depart:

Is It Safe to Travel to Ecuador?

Ecuador has experienced a rise in crime, primarily due to escalating drug-related violence and gang activity.  While not a major producer of illegal drugs, Ecuador is sandwiched between Peru to the south and Colombia to the north, both major cocaine-producing regions.  Unfortunately, this contributes to the country’s role as a transit area for narcotics bound for international markets.  Therefore, port cities like Guayaquil and Esmeraldas have seen significant crime and drug-related violence.  In response, the Ecuadorian government has often implemented measures such as a nationwide state of emergency, nighttime curfews, and military checkpoints to protect its citizens.

While visiting Ecuador remains possible for international travelers, safety precautions are essential.  Avoid high-risk areas in Guayaquil and Esmeraldas, do not travel alone or late at night, and share your travel details with the U.S. Department of State through their STEP Program to receive updates and advisories.  When exploring, especially in busy cities or even remote regions, stick to organized tours with good reviews, and use trusted transportation.  Pickpocketing and petty theft can occur in crowded areas and on public transport.

This is not the place to wear expensive clothes or jewelry. In addition, taking out your cell phone to take photos, navigate walking directions, or scroll through social media in busy city centers will only draw attention.  Be smart and keep your valuables at home or in your hotel safe.

How Can I Avoid Altitude Sickness?

Due to varying altitudes, especially in the Andes, be mindful of altitude sickness.  It may start as a headache, dizziness, sleeplessness, or nausea.  If you’ve never spent much time at high altitudes, acclimatize gradually and stay hydrated.  Give yourself a day or two to adjust to the altitude, and remember, Quito is at 9,000 feet.  Just walking up a flight of stairs to your room will feel like a big effort!

Do I Need Vaccinations for Ecuador?

If you only plan to visit the coast and stay in major cities like Guayaquil, Quito, and Cuenca, or visit the Galapagos Islands, you will not need vaccinations.  However, vaccinations may be required if you will be visiting the Amazon.  These may include yellow fever, malaria, and dengue fever, which are transmitted through mosquitoes.  Check to see which ones you might need and if your healthcare provider offers this.

Yellow fever vaccine was recommended for our trip, and we quickly learned that not many pharmacies carry it.  Schedule an appointment a few weeks before your trip to give the vaccine time to take effect.  To help reduce mosquito bites while traveling, pack a good insect repellent and long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Can You Drink the Water in Ecuador?

Drink bottled or purified water while traveling in Ecuador.  Tap water is not safe for drinking.  Almost all reputable hotels, cafes, and restaurants serve bottled water or use purified water for making drinks and ice.  Bottled water is very inexpensive, less than $1.00 for a large bottle, so always carry one with you.

What is Ecuador’s currency or exchange rate?

Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar, so as an American traveler, you will not need to change money upon arrival.  This surprises and delights most travelers!   There are ATMs in most city centers and the cost of goods is much less than you will find in the U.S.  However, whether it’s accommodations, meals, or transportation, most Ecuadorians prefer cash.  Carry small bills and get change.  You’ll be using a lot of $1 coins and fifty-cent pieces, and no one ever has change for a twenty!

Outdoor Activities in Ecuador: Final Thoughts on the Local Culture and Cuisine

The best outdoor activities in Ecuador have something for everyone.  While exploring, remember to try all the local cuisine.  After a cold, blustery hike to the Jose Rivas Refugio at Cotopaxi, our first few bites of Locro de Papa were outstanding!  We went on to eat this creamy potato soup, garnished with cheese, avocado, and a side of crusty bread daily at Tambopaxi Lodge.  If you’re in the coastal towns of Montanita or Puerto Lopez, you can’t go wrong with ceviche and a cerveza after a surf or whale-watching tour.  The fish is often caught fresh that day!

In addition, the floral and fruity aroma of every cup of Ecuadorian coffee was incredible and gave us that extra boost before a morning hike.  And the chocolate!!  Most of the cacao is grown near the coast at small organic farms or cacao plantations that you can visit.  If you’ll be in Quito, make an appointment to visit Yumbos Chocolate Shop for a tasting or visit their factory in Mindo.

Defining Your Travel Trade Show Marketing Strategy

Still not sure which shows to attend, how much to budget, who to send, and what your return on investment could be?  Well, you are not alone.  Here are some things to think about:

1. What are your tradeshow costs?

First, add up your costs for the tradeshows you’ve selected to attend this year:

• Flights, accommodations, transportation (for you, your team, and your booth if exhibiting)
• Food and beverages, hosting client dinners
• Exhibitor booth space plus booth design if you do not have a booth already

2. What audience does the travel trade show serve?

Is the travel trade show or event you’re considering consumer-facing or B2B?  Will your booth be visited directly by consumers and travelers?  Or will this be a chance to meet with travel buyers, and get your offerings featured with new agents or media outlets?

3. Can you schedule meetings at the trade show?

As you will be investing quite a lot of time and money to attend one of these travel industry tradeshows, can you set up meetings ahead of the show and plan out each day?

Pro Tip: Many tradeshows now have apps or an exhibitor/vendor portal where you can schedule or request meetings, and connect with media or travel buyers before you arrive!  In addition, many of the tradeshow apps let you schedule and promote a happy hour, meet & greet, or giveaway at your booth!

4. What is your expected ROI for each event?

Attending one of the bigger travel trade shows can eat up a good portion of your marketing budget.  Therefore, make sure you have goals set for what you expect to get out of each event:

For big tradeshows, do you have team members not only to staff your booth but also to walk the tradeshow floor?

Here are a few other ideas we’ve used:

• Bring a big wheel that people can spin to win your products or fun items with your logo on them.

• Create a daily booth giveaway, winners must be in attendance!
• Set up a photo booth, complete with fun hats, glasses, and wigs themed to match your brand!

Planning a surf trip to Playa La Saladita?  Well, you’ll be rewarded with a lot of waves, and most likely the longest rides of your life!  You’ll also have your fair share of mouth-watering tacos, warm ocean water, green sea turtles, and all the coronas or piña coladas one could ever want!  And even if you are brand new to surfing, Saladita is a great spot to learn!

Nestled on the Pacific coast of Mexico, La Saladita is a sleepy palm-fringed seaside village surrounded by green mountains and rugged dirt roads.  It’s located off the beaten path from larger towns like Zihuatanejo or Ixtapa and therefore has none of the typical tourist attractions and t-shirt shops.

The Surf Break at La Saladita

Surfing Saladita is a great destination for those who love longboarding!  It’s renowned for its long, peeling left-hand point break.  Therefore, the consistency and length of the waves make it an ideal spot for surfers of various skill levels.  It’s home to the Mexi Log Fest, and finally, Saladita is the perfect spot for a girl’s trip!

So whether you’re a beginner looking to catch your first wave, or an experienced surfer seeking a long ride, Saladita offers an exceptional surfing experience for everyone!  And it’s why surfers from around the world are drawn to this unique surf community and authentic coastal atmosphere.  In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the essentials of planning a surf trip to Saladita, covering everything from airport logistics to the best surf rentals and accommodations.  So vamos, let’s go!

When the waves line up like this, every day, it’s hard to find a more consistent, beginner-friendly surf break!

Getting To Saladita: Flights to Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa

Your journey to Saladita begins with a flight to Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa International Airport (ZIH), the nearest major airport.  Many airlines operate flights to Zihuatanejo, offering convenient options for travelers.  Zihua, as Zihuatanejo is often referred to, is a busy Mexican coastal town with a small fishing port, and great inexpensive options for dining, shopping, and accommodations.  It’s also classified as a Pueblo Magico or ‘magical village’ due to its history and cultural significance.

Just to the north, Ixtapa offers more luxurious accommodations and a more family-friendly environment.  Ixtapa is like a small Cancun, complete with beautiful beaches, all-inclusive hotels, swim-up pool bars, and nightlife.  But keep in mind, this is the Pacific Ocean side of Mexico and not the Caribbean.  So most of those crystal clear blue water Instagram-worthy spots will be hard to come by.

Renting a car is recommended, however, if you only plan to go to Saladita for a few days of surfing, it’s not necessary.  There are taxis and airport shuttles that can take you to your Saladita accommodations.  The drive from the airport in Zihuatanejo to Saladita takes approximately 1 hour.

Lastly, if you are new to surfing, or even an intermediate longboarder, there is no need to fly with your board.  There are dozens of beautiful longboards for rent, all shapes and sizes, for as little as $10/day!  More on this in a bit.  However, if you are planning a longer surf trip, or you are a more experienced surfer and want to explore some of the bigger surf breaks nearby, you may want to bring a shortboard.  Either way, check the airline fees and regulations beforehand on fees for sports equipment and oversized bags.  Airline carriers like Volaris will charge you extra for everything!

Car Rentals and Driving in Mexico

Upon arriving at Zihuatanejo airport, if you plan to rent a car, you’ll find various car rental options, including international and local agencies.  It’s advisable to book your rental in advance to ensure availability and secure the best rates.  And to ensure your surfboards can either fit inside or the car will come with a roof rack.   In addition, bringing your own tie-down straps is not a bad idea if you are traveling with a board.

Keep in mind, you will need to pay for Mexican car insurance as your home insurance policy will not likely cover you while driving in Mexico.  A sturdy and reliable vehicle is recommended for the drive to Saladita, especially if you plan to explore the area’s off-the-beaten-path destinations.  However, we do not recommend driving on your own on dirt roads nor should you drive at night. 

While incidents are relatively rare, there have been reports of criminal activity, including robberies and carjackings, occurring on the highway between Zihuatanejo and La Saladita at night.  Foreign travelers are generally more vulnerable, especially when driving with surfboards on the top of their car down unmarked dirt roads to and from the beaches. 

In addition, there is limited cell service once you leave the Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa area, so another good reason to stick to driving during the day, and only on the main roads.

Surfing Saladita: Where to Rent Surfboards or Book a Surf Lesson

A trip to Playa La Saladita is all about surfing.  The long left-hand point break is perfect for surfers of all levels, from beginners to advanced riders.  You can paddle out from several points along the beach, and get all the way out to the point without even getting your hair wet!   And you will not need to duck-dive big set waves like you would with a typical beach break.  And here you find a lot of women in the lineup.  I mean, a lot.  So again, the perfect beginner-friendly spot for a girl’s trip if you are all learning together!

Unless you’ve arranged to rent a board through your accommodation, or you’ve booked a surf camp, there are several spots along the beach to rent a surfboard or book a surf lesson.  These include Chucho’s and Brandon’s.  Neither have websites, it’s very rustic here, but you can connect with them through Facebook or Instagram.  Or just walk over when you arrive.

We loved working with the crew at Brandon’s where rentals will typically cost you about $10/day and a lesson closer to $30/day.  You can also negotiate a week of surf lessons or board rentals for a better price!

Surf Breaks Near Saladita

If you get bored of surfing the gentle waves at Playa Saladita and looking for something with more punch, there are several surf breaks nearby.  These include La Boca, The Ranch, and Troncones.  In addition, there are several other unnamed beach breaks and point breaks both north and south of Saladita proper.  Take care exploring the more rugged destinations, and when in doubt try to go with a local who is more familiar with the roads!

Things to do in Saladita Besides Surfing

Keep in mind, besides surfing, there is not a wide range range of activities available.  Therefore, plan to immerse yourself in the local surf culture, make friends with others learning to surf, and enjoy post-surf tacos and beers together while watching the sunset.  The calming, natural beauty of the tropical jungle invites you to grab a spot in a hammock, pick up your book, and settle in.  But if you do want a few other ideas of what’s available besides surfing in Saladita, here are our favs:

1. Massage on the Beach:

There is a beachfront massage tent near Chucho’s Surf School and Benny’s restaurant.  Here you will find two wonderful ladies who give the best massages at a very reasonable price- $45/hr!  Perfect for a couples massage or a Saladita girl’s trip!

2. Book a Sea Turtle Tour or Turtle Release:

You will spot sea turtles out in the surf, but if you want to learn more about them, visit Troncones!  Here you can watch them dig their nests, lay eggs, or release baby sea turtles out into the ocean!  Learn more at Discover Troncones Saladita.

3. Fishing:

The region around La Saladita and Zihua is known for its excellent fishing.  However, you will not find large fishing charter boats as you might in Cabo or Puerto Vallarta.  You’ll most likely be the only person in a small boat with your guide!  Check with your hotel or ask the locals where you can book a half-day fishing trip.

4. Horseback Riding:

Right where the main road ends and meets the beach in Saladita you’ll find horses.  You can choose a guided ride on the beach or down the quieter dirt roads near town.  Horseback riding is very inexpensive, and again, perfect for couples or a girl’s trip activity!

5. Rent Quads:

Even more perfect for a girl’s trip to Saladita would be to rent quads!  Tearing through the jungle on rugged dirt roads is much more fun on a 4×4 off-road buggy than in the backseat of a car.  So rent a set of quads and cruise the town in style!

6. Explore the villages of Troncones, Playa Majahua, and Zihua:

To the south of La Saladita, Troncones and Playa Majahua are worth a visit.  Here you will also find great beaches, good surfing, and that same laid-back atmosphere.  You’ll also have more options for restaurants and higher-end accommodations like the Inn at Manzanillo Bay and Majahua Palms.  And even if you don’t stay here, both resorts are great to visit for sunset cocktails and dinner!  And yes, you can take your new quads here too!

What might also be fun is to stay a night in Zihua before you fly back home.  There are some gorgeous hotels in Zihua, like the Thompson Zihuatanejo, all the way down to your budget-friendly motels and hostels.  In addition, Zihua is a great place to go shopping, which you will not find at Playa Saladita, although the pueblo of Saladita does have a few stores to pick up things like food, beer and sunblock, like La Equina.  You can also snorkel in Zihua at either Playa Las Gatas or Coral Beach at Isla Ixtapa.

7. Try the Local Cuisine:

Indulge in seriously authentic Mexican cuisine at the local eateries along the beach in Playa Saladita.  From the freshest seafood to carne asada and sopes, which are like very thick but soft taco shells, your taste buds are in for a treat!  Almost all dining will be outdoors, with brilliant views of the surf and sunset.  Some of our favorite beach bars and restaurants in Saladita include:

• Jovita y Pancho: South of the village, you’ll need to pull yourself across a river in a little boat to get there but great for afternoons and nightlife!
• Marea La Saladita
• Benny’s or Paco’s: No frills beachfront atmosphere. Great for post-surf tacos and beers.

Where to Stay if Surfing Saladita

Accommodations in Saladita cater to a variety of preferences and budgets.  From beachfront villas you can rent for a girl’s trip to budget-friendly hotels, you’ll find several options that suit your needs.  Here are some recommendations:

1. Cassa Macu or Casa Nu La: These options are not beachfront, but perfect for those seeking privacy and luxury.  You’ll find many of these sleek new builds off the main road.
2. La Chuparosa: Small, private beachside hotel villa with pool.
3. Casa Esmeralda and Saladita Beachside Inn: Budget-friendly beachfront accommodations.

Final Thoughts on a Surf Trip to Saladita

The perks: Super speedy boil- about 100 seconds!! Insulated container with coffee press neatly inside.  Very portable.  Easy to clean.  Can be used to heat water for lots of other meals!

The cons: It’s small, so if there are more than 2 of you, you’ll need to make another batch.  You need to buy the mini fuel canisters, although these seem to last forever, especially if you’re only using them to make coffee!

Well, we all love pizza.  I wasn’t a believer that the Ooni Pizza Oven could transform the way we make pizza, but it does.  It’s incredible!!!  The oven heats up to 950°F/500°C and within seconds, your pizza is crisp and delicious!

Pros: You can hook it up to propane or use wood to fire your oven.  In addition, the Ooni Pizza Oven can come camping with you.  It’s portable and has a travel bag!

Cons: It takes some practice to get the pizza right.  A lot of practice.   You’ll need to buy a few tools in addition to your Ooni- a pizza peel, scraper, and oh yeah, you should learn how to make your own dough!

8. Garmin In Reach- A Satellite messenger for the truly adventurous

 

Does your outdoor adventurer disappear for hours or days into the backcountry?   Well, whether hiking, skiing, sailing, or rock climbing, having some sort of communication or location device is a necessity.

Therefore, a great gift for your outdoor lover could be a Garmin InReach, which acts as both a personal locator beacon (PLB) and a satellite messenger device.  REI did a great job of breaking down the differences between each.  Here are a few PLBs and satellite messengers on the market:

• ACR- ResQLink

 

Perks: By using satellite technology, you can send and receive messages, navigate your route, get the weather, share your journey, and send out an SOS signal to a global response center that’s staffed 24/7 if needed.  Talk about peace of mind!

Cons: However, there is a downside to purchasing a Garmin InReach or Spot over the basic PBL or RescueMe device.  You or a family member will need an active subscription when using the Garmin InReach, but you can pay only for the month you need it.  As an example, Garmin InReach subscription plans can be annual or monthly and range from $15-65 depending on the plan you choose.

 

Garmin makes several products that can help you keep in touch via satellite when there’s no service.

 

9. Jackery Power Station- for Van Lifers or Outdoor Lovers Who Work From the Road

 

One of the biggest challenges we face while camping and on extended road trips?  Having a reliable power source.  You can opt for camping in spots with electricity hookups, but these are often hard to get.

Therefore, to charge everything from headlamps to laptops, gift your outdoorsy friend a Jackery Power Station and a portable solar charger!  They can charge it when the sun is out, and if it’s not, the Jackery can charge off the car when it’s running.

Other brands that make portable power systems we like?  Biolite, Goal Zero, and Anker.

Another emergency charger we were gifted and can’t live without?  The HALO Bolt Charger.  This baby has enough juice to jump-start your car and charge your laptop several times!!

10. Emergency Medical Kit- A Gift for the risk-taking, outdoor adventurer

 

What can you do to protect the outdoor adventurers in your life?  Get them a medical kit for emergencies!  Our favorite ones are from Adventure Medical Kits.  And, they come in lots of different varieties based on where you travel and for how long. 

We’re big fans of getting educated and being prepared.  We took a Wilderness First Responder Course and wrote a blog about it, and we also took our Avalanche Level 1!  And yes, I wrote a blog about Avalanche Safety on Backcountry Adventures!  You get the point.  We like to be prepared…the more you know and all…

 

Have friends or family that rock climb? Well, it requires A LOT of gear. And not only climbing gear, but everything you need in case of an emergency while 1,000 feet off the ground.

 

11. Headlamps, Lanterns, and String Lights to Brighten Up the Night

 

Light up the campsite, or any area outdoors that’s too far from a power source, with a few sets of Bio Lite String Lights.  In addition, Biolite makes portable table lamps or lanterns that double as a charging station.  And we never go on any outdoor adventures without packing a Petzl headlamp.  They are always great if you get caught out after dark, for setting up camp at night, or making dinner!

Most Petzl headlamps and Biolite string lights are USB rechargeable,  lightweight, and easy to pack!  Never be afraid to leave your tent to walk to the bathroom again!

 

 

12. The Meater- A Gift for the Grill Master

 

The MEATER is a Smart Meat Thermometer that connects to your phone with Bluetooth and works great for the BBQ grill or in the oven.  For those who guesstimate the time it takes to cook chicken or medium-rare steaks, or those who wander from the grill because they are multitasking, the MEATER is perfect!

The app guides you through what you’ll be cooking and gives you the estimates on time needed, temperature, etc.  It pings you when it’s time to take your meat off the grill, and then sets a timer for your meat to rest.  Never overcook or undercook your meat again!

13. Wool Blankets, Beanies, Thermals, and Socks to Keep Warm on Chilly Nights

 

Ever since we visited the Pendleton Woolen Mills in Pendleton, Oregon, we have been big fans!  A nice Pendleton wool blanket, wool socks, thermals, beanies, and sweaters all make great gifts for your outdoor adventurers!

Here are a few reasons to buy gifts made from merino, alpaca, cashmere, or angora wool:
